Chapter 27 : Mother

David’s POV

“David, darling, tell me you’re not wearing…that?”

I looked down at the cotton sweater Marcus had given me. The Beta had been surprised I didn’t have clothes in any of the colors I’d liked, and splurged on the red sweater with the leftover money he’d gotten from working as a busboy at Marty’s. Like Suzy before him, Marcus was kinder than the world would allow. Give it time because nothing good like that lasted forever without becoming a little jaded.

“What’s wrong with the sweater?” I’d miss-stepped, just a little too much emotion to be neutral about it. A mistake.

Mother looked at me critically. The way she always did when I’d failed to meet her standards.
