Finally, I woke up and when I checked the
time it was 10 a.m. I felt like going back
to sleep but I couldn't do that. So, I had
no choice but to jingle the bell at my
bedside. A few minutes later a maid
came in to inform me that breakfast
has been served. I had to wash up
before going downstairs to have my
breakfast. The aroma that greeted my
nose made my stomach rumble. I ate
like a glutton because never have I had
such good food. While stuffing myself with
food I heard that beautiful voice that
belongs to Sade saying careful, don't
choke yourself, nobody's chasing you.
She came over and sat down and she
was looking more beautiful than the last
time. She looked like a goddess. Then she
said Lota after eating I'll take you shopping
for some clothes and when we are back we
will talk about your education. I could only
stare because everything I'm hearing right
now sounds very foreign to me. An hour
later I found myself sitting in the car with
sade and the chauffeur driving us to the
mall. When we arrived I couldn't believe I
was about entering in this place to shop
for clothes. My mum and I have once been
chased away from the gate of this mall
because we were begging here. I
remembered my mum again and I felt sad.
I looked at the gate and said, mum I am only
14 years old. Why did you have to leave
me? Sade they came over and said "that's
okay. Let's go change your life."
Seeing the price tags n the clothes, I was
afraid to wear them because I felt my body
will contaminate them. These clothes were
priced in thousands and tens of thousands.
The most expensive clothing my mum ever
bought was eight hundred naira and it was
for Christmas. I could still remember that
clothing because it became my glad rag.
We left the mall with lots of clothes and
shoes and later stopped at an eatery for
some ice cream before proceeding to make
my hair. I didn't understand why I deserved
all these things and why my Mum couldn't
wait to share in it. We got home and Sade
asked what class I stopped in school, so I
told her I had only attended primary
school. I noticed she looked at me like I
was weird for a few minutes before saying
we will get you a tutor because you must be
educated. That's all I can do to help you
because I can't save you from your fate. Then
I asked her, "what is fate?" And she said it is something you will know when you learn how
to read and write properly.
After that, she took me into my room to try
out the new clothes we bought. I stood in
front of the mirror and the person looking
back at me does not look like me.
I couldn't believe I could ever look this good.
