Chapter 217

I glanced at my dirty, bloody uniform then at the cell. There was nowhere I could hide the smuggled bottles of water and bars.

“I’ll just eat them now,” I said as I gratefully accepted the supplies. “Give Pip your jacket,” Danielle ordered Summer.

Summer banged the heel of her palm against her forehead. “I’m so

dense.” She shrugged off her jacket and handed it to me.

I wrapped a bottle of water and the rest of the chocolate bars inside her

jacket and laid it in the corner of the cell. Then I lifted a bottle of water, turned the lid, and took a long swig.

My parched throat instantly felt better. I bit off half of a chocolate bar, chewing quickly before I swallowed. “You girls are the best.”

“Here.” Paris removed a brown bag from inside her jacket as well. “Two large sandwiches for a big-mouthed North American female werewolf who

beat the shit out of Blow Job.”

All of us laughed, the mood lightening despite me being a jailbird.

I giddily accepted the brown bag. “Best breakfast ever! Thanks again,

girls.”

I placed it on top of Summer’s jacket and bounced back to them. I’d

consume the food later. Right now, I wanted to spend every second with my friends, regardless of my hunger.

“We can’t stay long,” Danielle said. “We bribed the guards for a brief visit. So, we’ll just get to the point and give you the updates.”

I nodded, my eyes becoming a bit misty. They’d taken a great risk coming to see me. I’d become a criminal by hitting the shifter princess. Danielle could have just walked away and kept her impeccable, clean record instead of being linked to me.

She eyed me, her throat moving as emotions twisted her expression. “You took the hit that was meant for me.”

“You wouldn’t have gotten that hit if not for me,” I said, then rage shot to my middle. “The instructors and the guards should have stopped that cunt when she tried to maim you, but they did nothing.”

I was also disappointed in Shade. He could’ve stopped the fight.

“It’s shifter culture,” Danielle explained. “We’re a brutal and violent species who stick to a strict hierarchy. It’s never about being fair. It’s always about power.”

My eyes darkened. “It’s always big dogs eating smaller dogs.” I waved a hand to dismiss the thought. If I expected this world to give me some kind of justice, I was seriously mistaken. The only way to fight back was to become the biggest, baddest predator.

“How is BJ, anyway?” I asked, baring my teeth. “I might not get out of here, but if any of you bump into her, tell her I miss her.”

“You’ll get out of here!” Danielle said fiercely. “I’ve sent word to my father, but it will take him five days to get here after he gets the message. The horseman War destroyed global telecommunication and air transportation. The fastest way for supernaturals to travel is through a leyline, but leylines aren’t reliable either. Dad has to go through three leylines to get to Nevada from Japan.”
