"that is not a good thing to say! Her father cautioned. "You should know how to talk infront of children"
They were doing it again, talking in front of her, like she was not there, like she was some kind of abstract idea.
"Who are you calling a child? Does Anna look like a child to you? Her mother asked rhetorically. She knows the question, is what she should be asking as his wife.
Anna kept wondering why they were talking about her as if she was deaf. Looking away, she tried to hide her tears, but her mother was too fast and she noticed it.
"Oh dear, you don't have to cry.
Anna was taken aback by her statement, she had thought that her mother was not seeing her, but she had been wrong, as a matter of fact, she had been looking at her, since she walked in.
She gathered Anna in her emvrace, while Angel, held on tightly to Grandpa.
"I told you to watch what you say, now you have made her cry" he said while stroking his granddaughter's hair.
"But I didn't ask a bad question, I was just worried for my son in-law"
"Keep your worry to yourself" his voice was firmer now, he didn't like the question his wife had asked and he had made that clear to her,. "what is the doctor saying about his condition, he really does look terrible?
Now it was her mother's turn to attack.
"Is that not the same question I asked, now are you not hurting her with your question?
She was ignored by her husband whom seem busy stroking Angel's hair, and waiting for Anna to answer.
"I have asked the doctor too and he said he would wake up, that there would be visible signs to show that he was about to wake up.
"How will you know those signs when you are sick yourself? Her father added, but her mother smiled and said.
"I think she is not that sick, her mother said and have her a knowing look.
"Oh God! Anna exclaimed and rolled her eyes.
Was she that obvious that anyone who sees her immediately sees pregnancy in her.
"Are you not seeing that she is glowing?
She added and Anna could only wish for the ground to open and claim her.
Her father, understanding what his wife was indirectly saying, started looking intently at Anna. She couldn't allow her father to absorb his thought, she had to divert his attention from herself, so she started explaining what the doctor had told her about waking up from coma.
"The doctor said and I quote"
When your loved one first starts to “wake up” from or come out of the coma, he may not be able to focus his eyes. He may or may not be able to respond to you. He may look as if he is staring off into space. Part of this is from the injury; part of it may be from medicine. Movement can be another sign of improvement. At first, movements may be random like flailing arms, then may progress to semi-purposeful (such as pulling at tubes) and possibly moving in response to instructions (“Squeeze my hand.”). The patient’s awareness of self and his surroundings increases as he improves and get better.
