She remembered Drexel. He was the one without wings and with the surreal glass eyes . Thinking of him made her think about the other angel she had met.
Rehan.
She still planned on apologising for touching his wing when they met again. Nuriel might deny it but she had seen how the angel had reacted when she had touched his feather.
He clearly had not appreciated the gesture.
She blew out her cheeks and placed her hands on her waist.
Recalling what Nuriel had told her last night before she fell asleep. That she was apparently the first fairy to rise in centuries and the holder of the first account.
Whatever that meant.
There was no more denying it this time. She was a fire generating madwoman who was also mated to an angel.
Wasn't life full of surprises!
Flame let the angel lead her out. It felt strange to be wearing shoes again. The simple pair that Nuriel had provided her was surprisingly comfortable.
They went down a staircase and came to an open part of the house. It was the space right after the front door. With windows illuminating the space.
" Right this way, " Nuriel said. Placing his hand on her lower back. And she felt shivers coursing their way throughout her entire form. Like little flecks of fire that wanted to erupt. And despite that she still found it comforting.
He led her to the front door. It was the first time she had been there. Ever since she had arrived there she had remained confined to the other levels of the large mansion.
Or castle considering that it was where the king lived. The king himself being the angels who stood so closely beside her. She craned her neck and looked back. Then she looked as far up as she could before her neck refused to move.
It truly was a lovely place to live. A little too large for her comfort but lovely nonetheless .
They got to the wide wooden doors and he opened them. An action that required him to free her of his hold.
She immediately missed the warmth of his hand. But not for long because he placed it right back as soon as he had pushed the doors open.
A fresh breeze swept across her face. She could not recall the last time she had breathed in air of such purity.
And when they stepped out, she gasped.
They were high up.
They were VERY high up.
The ground immediately outside the door was pebbled. And she followed the little small and soft looking stones all the way to where they stopped a few feet away. After that the ground changed into grass. And she could see what amounted to a great past the grass.
But once she looked to the distance all she saw were mountain tops covered in mist. Then she looked to the other side and where the pebbles ended, there was nothing.
Just empty space urging her to go forward so that she may be sucked down.
Who lived in such a place?
" Is everything okay? " Nuriel asked on noticing the discomfort on her lovely features.
" Kael told me that you built this place yourselves. Is that true? " she asked. Still looking at her suicidal surrounding.
" It is. Why? "
" And you chose to build it on a mountain? "
" We did.. well, two of the others did and the rest of us had no choice but to agree. "
She slowly nodded. It made sense that they would want to build their house on a mountain. They had wings afterall.
Plus they were immortal. Falling down from a great height and possibly dying was not something they had to worry about.
" Is there a problem? " The angel asked and she shook her head. Faking a smile.
" Nope. None at all. "
He narrowed his silver gaze at her and squeezed her shoulder. He could tell that she was not comfortable with being so high up.
" I assure you that there is nothing to worry about. It is completely safe up here, "
They had made sure of it. Putting into consideration that the staff needed to feel secure.
" Sure. If you say so. "
Flame then looked around. Wondering where Drexel was. According to Nuriel, he was the one supposed to take her to the dressmaker. She still could not believe that she was actually going.
A few seconds later, she heard footsteps approaching from beside her and she turned to see Drexel approaching.
And he was not alone.
Along with him were two other angels. Both of whom she had not yet met. Even from a distance she could see how captivating they were.
Both dressed in the same leather armor as Nuriel.
One had white and brown wings. The white not as pure as Nuriel but it still managed to capture her attention. And he had brown hair that was combed back. Making him appear somewhat distinguished.
And the other had green wings. The closer he got the more distinctive he appeared. The green was in different shades on each layer. And it reminded her of leaves as they changed colors during the season. And his dark hair gleamed in the morning light.
But despite all this. The one that stood out the most was Drexel. He might not have wings but he still managed to steal the spotlight while standing beside the other two.
The three finally got to where both she and Nuriel stood and they gave a curt bow.
" My king... my queen, " they referred to them both before lifting their heads.
Then the one with the green leaf like wings took her hand and placed a soft kiss on it. So did the other one.
She was never going to get used to that.
" It's a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, My name is Quillon, " the green one said.
Flame looked at his hazel eyes and smiled.
The other one introduced himself as Barin.
" Um... it's nice to meet you too, " she said realising that the air around her was now layered with intermixing scents from all if them. But she was still able to distinguish Nuriels from the others.
That exotic yet woody spice that she could not quite name.
" You just couldn't help yourselves, could you? " Nuriel asked the two. It was clear that they had lingered around with the intention of meeting Flame. He was not in the least surprised by their action.
It was a wonder that Rylan and Aziel had not done the same. He had seen all four of them talking outside the council room earlier.
" I'm sorry my king but we're not aware of what you mean, " Quillon said. Pretending to be unaware.
Those fools.
" I'm sure you don't, " Nuriel said sarcastically. Then he asked what they were still doing at the Triecan. Quillon was supposed to be at the preservatory awaiting him along with Bastian.
And Barin was supposed to be examining the spots where the victims had been found with Rylan.
Not waiting around to finally catch a glimpse of his Doseth.
Their excuse was that they had decided to do some training first. He decided to let it be. He too could understand their excitement.
Well, some of their excitement.
Because yes, they had all been promised mates. And yes, they had all waited for three centuries.
But not all of them were completely comfortable with the idea. He could see it in their eyes. He could feel their perplexed emotions regarding the fact that the pairing had begun. All he could do was hope that in the end, everything turned out as it was supposed to.
Flame was still observing the new angels. They all seemed to be armed. Quillon had a sword strapped in a sheath on his belt. Same to Barin.
But Drexel wasn't wearing a sword. Instead, he had what amounted to a whip tied to his belt. It was a very shiny shade of silver. Coiled into a halo and she was certain that when uncoiled, it would be a very significant length.
" Where is Bastian? " Nuriel asked Quillon. Although he was sure he knew the answer.
It was Drexel that answered.
" He's gone..... He's always gone, "
The last part was said in a low and somewhat defeated tone. And Flame knew that there was hidden meaning behind his words but it was not her place to interfere.
Nuriel held her hand and led her a few feet away. Then he raised his hand as if to touch her but then changed his mind. Dropping it instantly. He wanted if possible to go with her. But it was only for a while then he would be back. And when he got back he would try his best to always be by her side.
" I have to take my leave now, " he said. Flame did not know why but the thought of being away from the angel bothered her. She wanted him close, even if all she did was look at him the entire time.
" Um... okay, "
" Drexel will accompany you. I have entrusted him with your safety, "
She looked at Drexel and nodded. He seemed nice. Not the talkative type but nice nonetheless.
And in the moments that followed all she and the angel did was stare at each other. As if each were searching for something proper to say but coming up with nothing.
" I should get going... I shall miss you, m'eudail, " he said and turned to leave.
" Hey angel, "
Nuriel stopped and turned towards her. Then she leaned in and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek. It lasted for not more than two seconds.
But they were the best two seconds of his life without a doubt.
He absentmindedly reached up and touched the spot where she had kissed him. And a smile naturally appeared on his absurdly handsome face.
She loved his smile. But more so, she loved being the reason behind it.
" Goodbye, " he finally said then he beckoned Quillon to go over. She watched as the two walked to the edge of the ground where the pebbles were replaced by air. Then Nuriel crouched and rose into the air, followed closely by Quillon.
She watched as they disappeared into the distance. And never before had she seen such a mesmerizing sight.
" Shall we go? " Drexel asked and she followed him to wherever he was taking her. Waving goodbye to Barin who in all that time, had not diverted his eyes from her.
