CHAPTER 89

      EPILOGUE...Five years later...

    Dylan rushed quickly towards the emergency room in the maternity ward,her phone against her ear still talking to her boss. She had known it had been a bad idea to go to work after the long night that they had spent massaging and calming down the false labour contractions Carly had been experiencing. They had counted the days and there was no doubt that it was time to welcome their kid together. She had tried to tell her that the best thing to  do that day was to stay home and make sure she was okay. Carly had dismissed her worries but to make her feel better, she had called her mother over to stay with her. Now she had been in the middle of an investigation when Carly's mother called to inform her that she had gone into labor. Now here she was trying to get there on time because she had promised she would be there to welcome the baby with her. This was her own kid, achieved by IVF conception. There was no way she was going to miss that.

                 "Please,I just have to be there for my wife and kid. You have to understand that this is my family. They will always come first." It was already around ten minutes trying to explain to her new captain why she had to leave in the middle of an investigation but he was still reluctant. How she wished that the former captain hadn't been transferred to another department two years back. This one was arrogant,he hated people but even more strongly,gay people like her and Kenny. At times she felt like reigning terror on him but held back just because he was her superior.

               "And I am telling you that I will be back on it once I have made sure that  they are both okay. Surely you can't possibly deny me that, it's what you would do for your wife." Without waiting for his reply,she added,"I have to go now. I will talk to you after."

    She quickly found the room Carly was in and by good luck, she was permitted inside though Carly's mother had to leave which she didn't mind. She took her hand and squeezed reassuringly.

                  "I almost thought you wouldn't make it,"Carly said in the middle of deep breaths and contractions.

                "I wouldn't miss this for anything sweetheart. I'm here now, just focus on your breathes and push."

   It didn't take long for Carly to deliver the baby safely with the encouragement from both Dylan and the doctors. Two minutes of pushing and pausing,the tiny girl came into the world crying at the top of her lungs. 

                 "It's a girl!" the nurse announced.

    Carly opened her eyes and they both smiled. Just what they had been hoping for.

                "You did it!" Dylan exclaimed tears threatening in her eyes. 

                 "No,we did it,"Carly replied in a soft and tired voice.

                "What do you want to name her?" The nurse asked.

   They looked at each other then spoke out the name together,"Theodora."

                  "Lewis Theodora McAdams," Dylan added in full then,"I'm a mom? I'm a mom."

   The first one was questioning while the other was a confirmation. Just then,Teddy got in the room with Carly's mother. He walked up to the bed and he was the first one to receive the baby from the nurse's arms. Now a grooming thirteen year old, tall and handsome just like his uncle Carl and his voice just beginning to break. He smiled and gave the little girl a tiny peck on her forehead.

                "Welcome to the world little princess. I'm your big brother and you are just in luck because we have got two super moms in the whole world. Thank you for choosing us Theo."

     They were both melting by the time he finished saying that. No doubt,he would be the best big brother ever. The one who had been struck most by his short speech was Dylan who stood up and faced Teddy fully. 

                "Did you just call me mom?"

 Teddy looked up,"Yeah. I have always known that you are that important to me. I was just waiting for the right moment to acknowledge that to you. You are the best,thank you for coming into our lives."

    That had to be the most emotional moment for all of them. Dylan more than anyone else. There was nothing more sweet than the feeling that she could once again say that she had her own family. She had lost one but through love, she had gotten another. What more could she want? This here, this life and that moment was all she needed. They say that second chances come once in a lifetime,but for Dylan they had come in a lot more ways than one and she would be forever be grateful.

  She pulled Teddy into a hug after giving the baby back to Carly and even though he was beginning to shy off from hugs,he didn't pull away from that. In fact,he held on tight to her and for a while, she felt like she was holding the whole world in her arms. Just a few more pieces. She took his hand then Carly's and looked at them in turns. The tears in her eyes were already blurring her sight but she went ahead to talk. She had a lot to say,so much to tell them and to be grateful for but when she opened her mouth to speak, only a few words got out.

               "Thank you. I had almost given up on living but you came back and gave me a reason to live. Thank you for giving me this chance and choosing me to be a member of your family. I will forever be grateful."

                "This is our forever Dee. We will always be together. Love found us and all we can do is embrace it and make the best out of it. We are all grateful that you are in our lives too."

                   "Yeah, this is ours Lee, just like we always dreamed of. We are finally here."
