The Only One Drowning

“Well, she won’t be if she were the one I’m talking to right now”. Dami said. Lanre burst into laughter. It was an annoying laugh. Dami felt it was irritating that he was trying to be serious with her and all she could do was laugh like he had cracked some joke.

“Dami! Ah! These ones are old lines now! I can’t be the one you are writing that song for”. Lanre said waving her fingers slightly. Dami frowned. “Olanrewaju! Why do you not believe you are my muse for that song?” Dami asked. Lanre scoffed. Then she asked him if that was why he called her name in full as if he is her father.

“Dami, I do not like people calling out my name as if they were present at the occasion when I was given the name. If you can’t call me miss Olanrewaju, simple Lanre will not kill you”. Lanre said. Dami laughed. “Ok! Emabinu Miss Olanrewaju! Did I get it now?” He asked after telling her he was sorry and addressing her as Miss Olanrewaju. Lanre smiled and told him that’s better.

“I am tempted to kiss your lips!” Dami said. Lanre eyes him disapprovingly. “Dami, please use your hand and wipe it over your mouth”. Lanre said illustrating it for Dami to see what she was telling him to do. She placed her palm over her mouth and wiped as if cleaning her mouth. Dami stood up from the side he sat on and walked towards Lanre. He sat down next to her.

“Lanre, if you can close your eyes picture me singing just a few minutes ago, if you can replay every word in your head. The part about her smile, her lips, her eyes. The part I want to put a mark on her that tells she is mine”. Dami said. With each words his voice became deeper and more like a whisper. Lanre had practically closed her eyes. She turns and looked at him with her eyes wide open. “You did not say all of that”. Lanre said.

Dami smiled. It was charming and heart warming. Lanre liked his smile she bits her lips. “Ok! I will give you a pass. You are handsome, cute and all that. And yes, you can sing, but..” “But what? I am not your type of guy?” Dami asked cutting Lanre off. She opens her mouth to say something but then shuts it again. She looks at him bemused he had actually said that. She was not even thinking of class or type. If it were to be type, then he falls in perfectly. She already fell in love with his voice. She knew if she keeps staying around him, she will fall into a deep well of love with him, and she may end up being the only one drowning. The only thing holding her right now was that thing in her heart that tells her this is not it. And she knows it is true. It wasn’t him. She always believed in her instinct, although sometimes she pushes it aside.
