Anita’s mother clapped her hands together in wonderment. “Anita, ndiberibe! You are a fool, if as an adult, a full grown woman, you will buy a dress and not try it on. A wedding dress at that!” Anita’s mother said feeling disappointed at her daughter.
She clasps both her hands together against her breasts. Then she sighed. She took out her phone and dialled a number.
“Ify check that dress if there is alinement”. The mother said to Ify.
Ify immediately do as she was told. She checked the dress. And then she reported back to her aunt that there was no space for alinement.
The woman immediately ended the call before the person she was calling on phone would answer the call.
She places both hands on her head. “Chinike! Hei! Ogini Ka e ge me na (What is the meaning of this na?” She said exclaiming at the end.
Anita bowed her head. She couldn’t believe that this was happening. All this while Lanre stood by. She was just listening to them, but she was not even focus on any if them.
“Why is she here even?” Anita said pointing towards Lanre. She was going to vent her anger on Lanre.
Lanre rolled her eyes at Anita’s words. It seems the girl was over pampered, and she was just seeing the bad part of it, courtesy of being born rich.
“Anita shut up! Mechionu u’gi”. The mother said asking her to close her mouth.
“I am calling your father here” The mother said again. She turned to leave.
“She is not that fat. She can still fit into the dress”. Lanre said.
“Of course I am not fat!” Anita retorted. Of course she was not fat. She was the skinny type and fair in complexion just like Lanre. But her body compared to Lanre was much more fuller.
The mother eyes her disapprovingly for her yelling the way she just did at Lanre.
“Lanre, my daughter, if there is anything you can do, please do”. The woman said pleadingly.
Lanre asked Anita to take of the dress, but she wouldn’t. “Anita, you have variety of choices to make. Either you dress up on a different dress, perhaps a dinner gown and go for your wedding which will be odd. Or you rush over to go get a wedding dress as soon as possible, on rent or bought. And you may end up getting what you do not like. Or, you can as well just forfeit the wedding. You aren’t the first. Or think it better this way, that I help you and you meet up for your wedding. Even if you arrive late, it will be less, compared to when you go out to get another one”. Lanre said to Anita. She was never going to change the way she talks for anybody.
That’s who she is. She hates painting words and filling it with some sort of flattery. She does not try to make it seem nice. She says it as it is.
