The Devil That Wants To Kill Me

Lanre arrived Nsukka. She never did what K asked her to do. She did not call him when she go to Enugu. She did not take a taxi and paid for it to carry her alone. Rather, she took a public bus, she felt safer with what she was used to. She did not text him. And now she has standing in front of their apartment. The door was locked. She thought Ify had returned. So why was the door locked. She sighed. Then she saw Chibuzor the caretaker.

Lanre greeted him, but he did not answer her. “Oga caretaker, I’m greeting you na! Haba! At least answer me”. She said to him. He looked at her. Then he rolled his fingers in the air and threw it down. Then he spat on the floor and cleared it with his shoe. “The devil that wants to kill me has failed. I will not die before my time. Witch!” Chibuzor said and went inside his apartment. The he locked it from inside.

Lanre was amazed at his attitude. So he has still not forgiven her for what she did. She shook her head. What was she going to do now? She decided to call Ify’s phone. But it was always busy. She wondered if Ify had blocked her line. She shook her head trying to chase away the thought. Ify was not like that. She possibly can’t block her from calling her.

“Lanre, are you back?” It was Fred. He seemed to have just returned from wherever he had gone. “No! I de market! You no see me de sell vegetable de give you? You go de ask stupid question”. Lanre said to him using sarcasm. She had told him she was at the market selling vegetables to him because he had asked her if she has returned when he was seeing that she has actually returned.

“Do you know where Ify went?” Lanre asked Fred. “See am for my nose!” Fred replied with his hand opening wide his nostrils. He was paying Lanre back for being sarcastic with him. So when she asked if he was aware of Ify’s whereabouts, he told her Ify was inside his nose.

Lanre hissed. She regretted asking him. She left her luggage outside in front of the house and left the compound. She was hungry so she was going to go get something to eat. She went to a local restaurant. On getting there she didn’t like the way it looked. She walked out of the local restaurant. She decided to go to a nice eatery to give herself a special treat. On getting to the eatery, she sat down at a table. She ordered for what she wanted. She sat sipping water as she waited for her order to be severed her.

While she sat waiting, Okechukwu walked in. He had a girl with him. The both of them came in holding hands. The girl was the first to recognise Lanre. “Lanre!” The girl called making Okechukwu to freeze where he was.
