Making The Stars Feel Their Relevance

“Omomi (my child)!” An elderly woman that seems to be in her sixties called when a tired looking Lanre stood by the door. She had just opened the door to see who was knocking only to find her daughter. She had finally arrived home. She started to dance to the music in her head, before her lips started to perform itself. Her voice echoed into the night making the stars feel their relevance as they stood out as the disco light for Mrs. Olayinka’s little party.

Lanre smiled despite the stress hanging all over her face. “Maami!” She called. The joy from her mother was slowly filling her heart as well. Mrs. Olayinka then fell on her knees and her voice raised in praise and thanks to God for granting her daughter journey mercies.

“Oluwa eshee! Eshee gon! Kabiyesi Baba! Koseni to dabire!” she said hailing God. Lanre felt like crying seeing her mother like this. “Maami! Why are you acting like I was kidnapped or something? You are making me emotional now”. Lanre said to her mother.

The mother stood up. She had a smile on her lips, it seemed like it was never going to leave. “Lanre, allow me praise my God. Do you think it is easy to go to school? Some of your mates wish to be in school. Some are fighting to graduate, but here you are, done. And I trust God that you won’t be called back for anything, because I know my daughter has the grace to overcome every obstacle”. Mrs Olayinka said.

Lanre smiled. She told her mother that she was tired and needed to rest. Spending ten hours sitting in the bus was a terrible experience. But she had no option but to, she has to come back home after all.

Lanre carried what she could with her into the house. After which, she returned to get the rest. Her mom was already helping her out. After they were done, her mother told her that there was food in the kitchen for her to eat. Lanre told her mother she would take her bath first before she eats. And she went to do just that.

Lanre returned after taking her bath only to see that it was starch and banga soup (palm fruit soup) her mother had prepared for her. She frowned. She was too tired to eat that. She left the kitchen to go ask her mother if there was tea available in the house only to find her mother was already asleep in the living room while the TV was left to play. She face palms herself. She wouldn’t want to wake her mother just for that. It was obvious that her mother was tired. The woman has been working through out the day in her restaurant. Even though she has workers under her, Lanre knows that her mother would still not want to rest. The woman was addicted to working, she didn’t care if her bones break. Lanre turns off the TV. Then she returned back to the kitchen. She ended up forcing herself to eat what her mother prepared.
