Get Away

“Lanre call Ify, let her know we are at the entrance of the hotel. Her mother said she will be the one to welcome us”. Mrs. Olayinka said to her daughter. Lanre looked at her mother. She tried to hide the anger.

“You did not tell me we were sleeping over?” Lanre said to her mother. The mom knew Lanre was angry. But as the saying goes, “Mother knows best”. Mrs. Olayinka acted like it was not a big deal.

“Do you expect us to travel back at night. You know Lagos-Ibadan express road is dangerous at night. And the engagement party will be at night”. Mrs. Olayinka said. Lanre could not be anymore pissed than age already is. She shits her eyes and took a deep breath. God knows she did not want to come!

Lanre picked up her phone and called Ify. At first Ify did not pick up her phone. Lanre had to try again several times. “Stupid girl! What are you avoiding? I’m already at the same hotel with you. If I wanted to say spiteful words to you, I would have done that the very first day I saw that magazine”. Lanre muttered within her breath seeing that Ify was not picking up.

“What is going on?” Lanre’s mother asked. The woman was getting impatient standing under the hot sun. “Heat in Lagos is times two”. Mrs. Olayinka exclaimed. Lanre stifled the laugh that would have erupted out of her. Her mother was complaining as it Ibadan was any different.

“I will try her number one last time, and if she doesn’t answer the phone, then I will call her mom. Happy?” Lanre said to her mom wearing a smile that doesn’t fit her actual mood. She dialed Ify’s number yet again. This time Ify did pick up.

“Lanre I’m busy, will call you later”. Ify said in a hurry and hung up. Lanre smirked. Ify definitely did not know that she and her mother was invited to the so called engagement party. She decided to text Ify telling her that she and her mother were outside waiting for her to come get them.

“Your mother asked us to wait here for you”. Lanre added. She was sure Ify would read this. She smirked imagining the look on Ify’s face when she sees her message. “Oh! So much for a friend!” Lanre said as she turned to her mother and suddenly hugged her. She needed the hug. She had so many emotions running through her. Yet she was standing there, trying to act all strong. But her mom had no clue.

“Get away jhoor! Do you want to kill me with your heavy weight before I see my grandchildren?” Mrs. Olayinka said pushing Lanre away. Lanre forced a smile.

“I’m tired, that’s why I leaned on you. If I die who will give you a grandchild. Olamide is in the navy, I’m sure no woman will want him. He is too difficult”. Lanre said. Her last words pissed off her mother.
