What About You?

Lanre pulled a pillow over her head to block out the voice in her head from confusing her any further. But it was a voice in her head. Doing that would not help matters. It was either she revert to seeking peace or she just lets it be abd ignore it.

Suddenly she was tempted to go read what Victory had said and every other person’s reply. She picked up her phone and entered into the class WhatsApp group chat. She had to scroll back up to check previous messages.

Then she realised why most people had mocked her.

“I heard the Governor’s son had come to propose to her in Nsukka, but she rejected him thinking he was not wealthy enough. And now it is too late because he will be marrying our very own Ify”. Victory had posted in the group chat. This was what got to Lanre the most. She wondered how Victory found out about K’s proposal to her. As far as Lanre was concerned, Ify is the only third party that has knowledge of this.

Lanre scoffed. “Did Ify tell Victory this? I told her to beware of this girl and that she would get her into trouble one day”. Lanre muttered. Lanre could not think of any other person that could be Victory’s source if not Ify.

She suddenly hated everyone that was in that class group chat. A lot of them talked down on her. Some said she was forming too big and had lost a big shot because of that. Some said she never deserved a Governor’s son. While some said God must have come through for the governor’s son by saving him from Lanre and making her decline his proposal. According to them, quite people like her were always wicked.

Tears fell off Lanre’s eyes on seeing all those comments. Sole went as far as sending a voice note to hurl insults at her. One person did try to tag her to the message, but the person had no clue what her user name was and had only used her name, Lanre. But her User name was her business name, “LAN’s Beauty Parlour”.

She had almost left the group when she saw Ify’s chat in the group chat as well. “You all should stop! Lanre will not be happy seeing this”. Ify had said. Lanre decided to throw a question at her.

“What about you? Are you also not happy?” Lanre typed this but could not send it. She cleared it off and existed the group chat. She was not going to stay in a group as suffocating as that where they only care about how much they are able to hurt a person. She placed the phone next to her pillow and shuts her eyes. Just then, her phone rang.

She picked it up only to see that it was Okechukwu who was calling. She decided to answer.

“Lanre, hope you are okay? I noticed you just left the group. I was calling you during the day to tell you to stay away from the group. But your phone didn’t ring”. Okechukwu said to her.
