Scary

Lanre smirked. Then she drew closer to Christian. “You will have to marry me”. Lanre said. She noticed a blank look on Christian’s face. She could not tell what was going through this mind but she somehow believed he must be shocked to hear her say that.

“10 million naira to my acct. I will need the first half before anything begins. Whether I lose or win, you are paying the 10 million naira because the deal is that I fight”. Lanre said. But Christian still did not say anything. She waved her hands at him.

“Stop! I can hear you”. Christian said to her making her to stop waving her hand at him as though he was far away.

“But it did not seem like you were listening”. Lanre said to Christian. He smiled and told her he was okay with the deal. He was okay with both deals especially the first one.

“Which?” She ask. He told her the marriage thing. She laughed. She told him that was just to pull his legs. She would never demand for such a thing.

“I wish you would”. Christian said. Then he immediately took a glass of water and gulped it down his throat. Afterwards, he told her he would send 5 million naira to her account the next day. Then he urged her to eat on. After they had eaten, he went to drop her off at her place.

Saying goodbye to her was hard even though he had left almost immediately as she got down from his car. He used one hand to hold his chest as if safe guiding his heart from falling.

“Somehow, I hope this doesn’t work out. I do not mind compensating with the rest of my life. I am not Kehinde! From the first day I spoke with you, seeing how assertive you were, I liked you. And after mentioning your name too often than I do mine, I have come to like you more. And when you made that statement that I will have to marry you, I thought to myself that that was what I wanted. I hope you lose him Lanre”. Christian said as he drove his way back home.

Meanwhile Lanre was seated in the living room with Chidinma. The both of them were talking about Chidinma’s day at work.

“I got punished because I added the wrong flavour to the cake”. Chidinma said.

“When it was being mixed? What sort of punishment?” Lanre asked. It seems it was the kind of punishment that was given Chidinma she was more interested on. Chidinma told her she was asked to kneel outside when the sun was scorchingly hot. And then her madam whipped her back telling her it was because she spoiled the cake.

Lanre did not know what came over her but she began to laugh. The laugh felt quite scary. Even Chidinma felt weary. Lanre asked her to open her back and show her. Lanre knew it would definitely leave a mark if the woman actually whipped Chidinma’s back. It was because Chidinma was fair in complexion.
