I'm Proud Of You!

Lanre was rushed to the hospital and admitted immediately. She was out for hours. By the time she woke up, she was already on the third drip. She frowned when she noticed the drip on her hand. She hated anything piercing her skin.

“Who brought me here?” She asked yet to even see who was with her in the ward.

“Aunty, you are awake!” Chidinma screamed for joy. She immediately rushed out of the ward to go call the nurse that was attending to Lanre. Lanre gritted her teeth wondering where Chidinma was going to in such a hurry. It was at this point she noticed her mother standing with a frown on her face.

Lanre blinked her eyes severally in disbelief. Then the mother clapped her hands in a dramatic way.

“Keep blinking those eyes ehn! Shey I look like ghost? No! You think you will die young so that I will not see my grandchildren, abi? Your plans have failed because I serve a living God that will never fail me”. Mrs. Olayinka said.

As a mother, Mrs. Olayinka was always worried about her daughter and seemed to have called just the right time when Lanre was being rushed to the hospital. Chidinma had answered the phone and told Lanre’s mother what happened.

“What am I doing in Ibadan when Lagos is not far?” Mrs. Olayinka had said leaving her restaurant for the sales girls in the restaurant and rushing to get to Lagos. She could not stay away knowing that if Lanre was rushed to the hospital then it was a serious case. Lanre would never let herself to be taken to the hospital for any reason. So she had to be by her daughter’s side. She felt their was no one there who could take care of a sick Lanre.

“Iyami!” Lanre called stopping her mother from nagging. “My head is paining me”. Lanre cried like a child. The woman immediately calmed down as though she was poured cold water.

“All this oyibo medicine don’t work. I will make sure you get discharged today. I will prepare some herbs for you tomorrow to stop the headache completely”. Mrs. Olayinka said to her daughter. Lanre smiled. Her mother sat on the chair beside the hospital bed.

“Omomi, I’m proud of you! That little girl told me how you helped her”. Mrs. Olayinka said. Lanre at once knew that her mother had interrogated Chidinma when she got to the hospital. She wondered what questions her motherust have thrown at Chidinma. Her mother when it comes to her children could turn out to be a pretty good detective.

“Hope you did not ask her embarrassing questions?” Lanre asked her mother. The woman cleared her throat.

“I forgot to bring anything for you since I was in a hurry. Once we get to your apartment, I will prepare hot pepper soup and catfish for my two daughters”. Mrs. Olayinka said. This made Lanre to smile. Her mother may have asked Chidinma some embarrassing questions, but she had accepted the girl already as her daughter.
