If You Say That Again

Lanre laughs at K’s words. “You are crazy! You want to confuse the old woman ni! She will wonder how I turned from black to fair skin. Like, “is this not the girl at the engagement?” She will say”. Lanre said to K. K shook his head. He told her his maternal grandmother was not at the engagement party and has no clue about it, unless someone must have told her. A frown crept into his face.

“My mother does not like the old woman and treats her like trash. She’s actually my step-grandmother. She took care of my mother when she was young”. K said to Lanre. Lanre felt bad for the old lady. She’s heard stories about people abandoning their parents, she never thought someone as high profiled as K’s mother would do such a thing.

“I feel for the old woman!” Lanre said. K nods with a smile. She decided she would go with him even though she needed to be back in Lagos and see for herself how Chidinma is doing. After all, the girl could be traumatized after staying in police custody. Nigeria police could be brutal when given such an opportunity. And she hates them as most of them were corrupt. There are only a few officers who are not corrupt, they barely get promoted or stay in a nice city.

“Kehinde, don’t you think we should get her something’s? She would be very much happy”. Lanre said to K. He smiled. He told her he had only thought if giving her money when he gets there.

“You can give her money, I will get gifts for her”. Lanre said with a happy smile on her face. She seemed excited. K told her he would check for the nearest supermarket on Google map so they could go there and she could get the gift she wants for the old woman. Lanre told to look for a market close by instead. K objected saying if they are to go to the market, it would waste a lot of time. Lanre glares at him.

“Check for the closest market before I beat you ni”. Lanre said to him giving him a threatening glare. K smirked. He told her she was cute and then he parked the car before searching for the closest market to where they were.

“There’s none”. K said to her. She have him a suspicious look.

“What? I did not see anything”. K said to her defensively.

“You look cute! Let’s go. I guess we will come across a place we can get something for her”. Lanre said to K. He grinned and got back into the road. He would occasionally smile and this made Lanre uncomfortable. She thought he was going mad.

“Hope you are okay”. Lanre said.

“I will be better if you say that again”. K said. She asked him what she had said before that he wanted to hear again. K asked her to tell him he looks cute. This made her giggle. She suddenly felt fearful for how happy she was. And then a scene flashed before her eyes. It was her dream. Would something bad happen of she fails to listen to her mother? Lanre wonders.
