Known To Spoil Things

Lanre remained in her room until she heard a knock on the door. It was her mother. She wondered if the man was here already or she still needed to stay in and ignore her mother.

“Lanre open this door!” The mother said after knocking for long and Lanre had not come to open the door. Lanre opened the door and went back into her bed. The mother told her to wear a nice dress and come out of her room in the next 20 minutes. Then she told Lanre not to spoil things before leaving Lanre alone in the room. Lanre laughed. She must be known to spoil things more than she fix things by her mom.

Lanre remained in the bed without doing anything until her mother came back in the next 20 minutes to come call her. She smirked at her mother’s astound look. The woman did not look pleased.

“I reduced a lot, so my clothes no longer fit”. Lanre said before walking past her mother out of the room. Mrs. Olayinka swallowed hard. She was worried already. It was obvious to her that Lanre will do everything she warned her not to do. She rushed to stop her daughter before she could step into the living room.

“Olanrewaju, go back to your room and change!” The mother said to her. She shook her head in the negative letting her mom know she was not going to carry out that instruction. Then she smiled at her mother’s stupefied look.

“I should be the one to bring a man to this house when I want to marry”. Lanre said as she pulled her hand out of her mother’s grip. At this point Mrs. Olayinka knew there was nothing she could do to stop Lanre. Lanre had already gone into the living room.

Mrs. Olayinka placed both hands on her head. She rushed into the living room only to find Lanre standing there like a statue. She walked close to her daughter and held her hand. Then she studied the face of the people in the living room to know what must have transpired before she got there. But it seems Lanre was yet to say anything. She also realised Lanre’s uncle’s were unhappy and were already scolding Lanre in their language for not greeting them.

Mrs. Olayinka pinched her daughter and asked her to greet her elders. Lanre raised her chin up with pride.

“I don’t see anybody in this room that is worthy of my greetings. But if that is what you want, ‘uncle Olumide, uncle Shola, what’s up?’” Lanre said. This act of hers made her mother placed her hand over her mouth. Lanre had just disrespected her uncles. The woman did not know how to react. She could not hit Lanre because of their visitors. And she could not just let it go because her brother in-laws may leave out of anger.

She told Lanre to greet them properly using their language. But Lanre refused. She whispered to her mom that she never saw them help her when she needed assistance, but they were here because she has a suitor.
