Nuts And Bitter

“Hearing your conversation on the phone with your brother, it just occurred to me what Anita was saying. Are you getting married to Gozie her elder brother? I saw the both of you together at Anita’s wedding. You rode in his car to the reception venue. And the mother of adamant on making you too be together that day”. K said to Lanre who just stared blankly at him. His eyes fell on the food she was yet to eat. He gritted his eat. After making him cook for her, she was yet to touch the food.

“Since you are not talking, it seems Anita was saying the truth. Or maybe you are using their head. I mean, you are engaged to Chris and you are going to marry Gozie. Yet you f**king make my relationship with Ify get worse than it already is”. K spat out angrily.

“Come and feed me, I’m too lazy to feed myself. Please!” Lanre said giving him a pleading look. K became more vexed because she has just ignored all his questions and acted as though he was not talking to her.

“Did you just ignore me?” He asked her. She asked him if she was supposed to explain anything to him.

“Of course yes!” He blunted out not even realising when the words came out from his mouth.

Lanre shook her head indicating she was not supposed to. She does not intend explaining anything to K. She felt there was no need but he wouldn’t let her be. He kept demanding that she explains how she’s engaged to his friend and Gozie at the same time.

“You should stop already! I hate being put under pressure”. Lanre said to him. She took up the fork and fed herself spaghetti. It was no longer as hot as it was when she first served it. She knew she would not be able to finish it before it gets cold. K took the plate of food away demanding she speaks or he would not mind the consequences.

“What is it to you? You told me not to contact you and from what I understand, we are strangers. No de ask me jamb question abeg (please, stop asking me difficult questions)” Lanre said to him.

“Then why are you here?” He asked.

“He should have left!” K said to her. She held his shoulder tightly.

“Cause I’m nuts and bitter! I’m nuts cause you keep pushing me away. I’m bitter because Ify is here with you. I want to hurt you both, I told you before, didn’t I?” She asked while arching her face closer to his. He pushed her away from him.

“What are you intending to do?” K asked. Lanre told him she was doing the only the they always do when alone.

“You are nuts. Chris is being fooled. And there I was thinking he was the one fooling around with you, trying to use you”. K said to her. Lanre asked him if he thinks Anita would come up with all those drama just to make her so called sister in-law to be sleep with another man in his room.
