Partner In Crime

Ebube had a smile on his lips. He always admired her. He was relieved finding out that not everyone who went to an all girl’s boarding school was a lesbian. Even if she was, it made him feel better getting to talk to her once in a while when they were in school. But he graduated before her as he was one class higher than her. He never got to see her again after leaving secondary school. He left Ibadan. It was never his home, he was only living with his uncle then. He did go to school, but while in school, he was learning trade.

Ebube had graduated from the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) about four years ago. But Lanre was only graduating now. It only mean she didn’t get into school the year she graduated from secondary school. He thought about it. It seems not everyone gets lucky enough to gain admission the year they are out of secondary school, but life itself does not give equal opportunity to everyone at the same time. Just like he did not get to see her until now. And now there was not much hope of being together with her. She seems very much interested in someone else. So he would gladly be her partner in crime since they could not be lovers.

***Flashback

Ebube was busy at his office when a call came in from a strange number. He hesitated picking it up. He was tired of getting his hope dashed again. Since he gave his business card to Lanre, he has been expecting a call from her, but each time his phone rings and he picks, it was always somebody else. So he ignored the call until he felt it would soon stop ringing, he picked up.

“Hello, is this Ebubechukwu Nwoye?” The voice from the other end of the phone sounded too familiar for Ebube not to recognise that it was Lanre. She finally called after one week. He clears his throat before replying Lanre. He told her he was the one and asked who she was even though he knew she was the one.

“This is Lanre! You gave me your business card at Laura’s birthday asking me to call you. So I decided to call today. Can we meet somewhere and talk?” Lanre asked. Ebube immediately agreed to meet with her thinking things may go his way. But that was how it started. It was how he got involved with Lanre and promised to help her when she needs it. Good thing he is a computer wizard and his hacking skill was more like top notch. He could actually help her do what she want and lead the clues to whosoever she wishes to make the victim. So that day, he became her partner in crime. He believed she was doing the right thing.

*********

Ebube stood up from the chair and left the bar after paying for Lanre’s drink. He had a smug look on his face. He did have fun even though at a point his heart was beating out of his chest.
