“I’m sorry about that! But I don’t care who you are mourning. Your friend killed my friend. I won’t let him off the hook”. Ify said to Christian as she raised up her head this time looking straight into his eyes.
“Kehinde didn’t kill anyone. He was trying to save her! If you knew Lanre you would know she was stubborn and wouldn’t listen to anyone. She never said anything. Don’t you know?” Christian asked. Then he told her he was done talking to her. He walked past Ify.
“Lanre would have been alive if K had not acted foolish in the first place. And if only he had made a decision on time before everything went out of hand. She would be alive”. Ify said this words. Christian shook his head and walked away. To him if he should ever blame anyone, it would be the Governor who played Kehinde.
Recently he has been trying to understand why the Governor did all he did, threatening K to see if he would fret or do what he actually wants. It turns out all the Governor ever wanted was to make his son more like him. He wanted to push K beyond his limits. Perhaps he wants K to follow his footsteps, be ruthless and heartless. Or maybe he really wanted a woman as thickheaded as Lanre to stay by his son so she could push Kehinde hard enough to climb his own ladder of success. But things got out of hand, because while he was needing one thing, he forgot that such a person cannot be controlled. No wonder killing her was the only way to control her.
“If Adewale Adekunle doesn’t pay for his crime, then I would say the world lacks a balance”. Christian said within himself. He got into his car and drove off.
Meanwhile, Ify remained in Ibadan. She wanted to stay with Lanre’s mother for a while. She did not want to leave the woman alone. At this point, she thought having someone like a daughter figure was what Mrs. Olayinka needed most.
So she had to sleep in their house. At midnight, Ify was forced to wake up when she heard footsteps and the sound of the door. She got up thinking someone most have gotten into the house. She was afraid, but she had to go see what was going on. She noticed someone had gone outside. She realised it was Lanre’s mother. Fear gripped her. What was the woman going to do outside. Ify wondered if she should go wake Olamide up in case the woman tries to do something dangerous to herself. But she could not even go to call Olamide because she feared what might happen if she let’s the woman out of her sight even for a second.
She decided to follow the woman. She followed Mrs. Olayinka until the woman stopped where Lanre has been buried.
A tear dropped from Ify’s eyes. It turns out the woman has come to her daughter’s grave to mourn. She wanted to go console her but stopped in her tracks as she had not expected what happened next.
