***The Hospital***
Joleen had slept on the couch the previous night, leaving her whole body arching. She previously slept on that same couch, but she never woke up to as much body pain as she had that particular morning. She usually woke up around 6 AM when she slept in the hospital, so as early as six, she was up.
'Maybe the hospital was never a place meant for resting,' she concluded. She went to have something to eat, and then later went to meet the doctor to get more information about her grandma's current state.
She was welcomed into the doctor's office with a pleasant expression.
"There you are," the doctor said.
"Sit," he added.
She sat and waited for the elderly doctor to write down whatever it is he was writing. He soon closed the file and his full attention was now on her. He looked at her kindly and softly, what was this about? She wondered.
They had a little chat, the doctor told her that they would have her grandma off sedatives in two days. And that it took that long only because she was older and needed a longer time to achieve assuring healing.
"Thank you doc," she said, standing to her feet.
"It's beautiful seeing kids like you." The doctor said, causing her to pause, feeling flattered by his comment.
"She is very lucky to have you," he added.
Joleen tucked her hair behind her ears, smiling and looking straight to the ground.
"Thank you," she said.
"No, THANK YOU," he said.
Her smile widened as she now proceeded to move past the chair she was previously sitting on.
"How long have you been here?" He asked.
"Umm, I'm not sure, was not paying attention to that, but pretty much every day since two days before the surgery."
"You look worked up, if you don't take a break, you are gonna break down yourself," he said.
"Take a break, have a little treat, then you can come back the day she is off sedative."
"It's not that strenuous, " she said with a faint forced smile.
"I have had worse days," she added.
"The body isn't meant to work like that, remember, if you break down, no one will be here to nurse her when she wakes." The doctor said.
His last word hit her, he was right. At this point, what was more important was when she wakes up.
After a little thought, Joleen took the next train, back to San Antonio.
It was still slightly passed 10 AM when she got back, she dropped her bag, then fell on the bed, and that was it.
She woke up passed 1 PM, a nap she didn't know she needed.
She felt a little relieved, her arching body was still there, but relieved. She rubbed her eyes, then rolled out of bed before stretching to the maximum her body could go.
"BANG BANG BANG!"
She flinched at the heavy knock she heard on her door. It was highly random for this to happen, so she wasn't wrong to be startled.
