The Surgery

Chapter Twenty-Six

Anna spent the next few days in the hospital bed. Her bruises were already healing. Vanessa visited her now and then. She'd come along with food, fruits and flowers. She would have been lonely in the hospital bed but for Vanessa. She'd even visited her mom on her behalf on other occasions. Having Vanessa as a friend was one of the best things that had ever happened to Anna.

She'd sent a text to Mr Williams, informing him that she'd report back to work when she was better. She however didn't get any reply from him. She'd even called him, he also didn't take or return any of her calls. The man was just cold and unfeeling. She'd expected him to drop by to check up on her - at least, as her boss. She wondered if he was this cold to other employees of his or if it was just her. Or was he upset with her?

Just then, a call came in and she immediately grabbed her phone, expecting it to be Mr Williams. Disappointment washed over her face as she saw that the call was from the hospital. The head nurse of the hospital informed her that it was the day of her mother's surgery. She'd completely forgotten about it. When she hung up the call, she was anxious. She needed to find her way to the hospital as soon as she could. Her mother needed her.

"What's wrong?" Vanessa asked, noticing creases on her forehead as her eyebrows furrowed.

"It's today, Vanessa," she said, nervously, rising from the bed. She could still feel a little ache in some muscles in her body as she rose.

"What is happening today?" Vanessa raised her eyebrow in question.

"Mom's surgery." She said tersely in a rather low tone.

"Oh, no! I completely forgot." Her hands found their way to her gaped mouth.

"We don't have time, we need to hurry," Vanessa said, grabbing her bag. She immediately remembered that Anna hadn't fully recovered. "Are you sure you can go in this state?" Vanessa added, looking Anna over.

"I'm perfectly fine. I just need a change of clothes. I obviously can't go in this," she said, scanning her hospital gown from her chest down to her knee.

"Let's head home first."

Anna was immediately discharged from the hospital after she assured the doctor that she was perfectly fine. When they reached home, Anna changed into something more befitting. She wore a white turtle-necked blouse with black pants and a long denim jacket. They headed straight to the hospital her mother was admitted. As soon as they arrived at the hospital, they found their way to the Operating Room.

Before now, her mum had undergone chemotherapy. The doctor had resulted to this because the leukaemia cancer cells had spread widely throughout her mother's body as her blood circulated. It wasn't clustered together in a single tumour like other cancer cells. He'd also prescribed a combination of drugs which contained chemicals that killed leukaemia cells, to her.

Additionally, he'd recommended certain diets that leukaemia patients ate to fight the disease, to her mother. She'd been on vegetables, fruits and grain diet. The doctor had advised that different kinds of vegetables and legumes should make up about fifty percent of her meal. The fruits she'd been eating were only blueberries and apples. She was also only allowed to take either fat-free or low-fat dairy products.

Also, he'd told Anna that since leukaemia was a systematic disease, surgery was just one of the other treatments that her mom would have to undergo. He'd educated her on the process involved in an autologous bone marrow transplant, which was the surgery that her mother needed.

One of the things he'd said was that stem cells would be injected into her veins, as the process stimulates the production of healthy white blood cells and red blood cells, and also the production of platelets. He'd also mentioned that the surgery would allow her mother to receive higher and more effective treatment dosages, as it replaces the cells that are lost through chemotherapy. Anna had listened very attentively to all the medical jargon that he'd told her despite not understanding most of them.

As she stood outside the OR, her heart began to beat rapidly knowing that her mum was currently undergoing surgery. Anna was pacing back and forth, biting her fingers. Vanessa was also there with her, as her support system. Anna silently prayed for her mother, she hoped that everything would turn out fine for her.
