Chapter 14: It's Grainy Outside

Sebastian’s POV.

Beatrice is quiet the rest of the drive to my family’s place.

Rather, she was quiet before, but it was a comfortable silence. The kind you sink into, and to have that with another person, let alone a relative stranger, is disarming.

After I talk about my parents, though, she withdraws into a silence that feels like we’re rooms apart despite being stuck in the same car.

I shouldn’t have brought up my parents. It’s so d*mn depressing, the story of the Yuletide massacre and how they lingered in comas for weeks afterward. Neither medicine nor magic could bring them back to us.
