Chapter 17: This News is Hot Off the French Presses

Beatrice's POV.

We should have had that conversation--the one about fake dating.

After we pass through the wrought iron gate, Sebastian veers off the main road toward one of the guest cottages located on the grounds of Havenwood.

He'd explained to me beforehand his plan for us to stay close, but clearly outside the main house. It'd afford us separate bedrooms and a place for me to interrogate Silas.

"My family is best loved from a distance." He laughed sharply when he said it. It'd come after he explained his plan. "And they know it. No one will think twice when I say my girlfriend and I prefer a bit of privacy."

The cottage in question is half a cottage. It isn't big--two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room with a dining table in it, and a galley kitchen. Sebastian's assistant, Myra, had shown me photos of the place.

"So you know what you're walking into." She patted my hand in a sisterly way, and I didn't know if I should be comforted or concerned.
