"And somehow," Allen said, glancing at his phone, "people liked it. So yeah, it turned into a job. But it's still my escape first. It still helps me… not go back to that place."

Larissa stepped closer and sat beside him, resting her hand on his. "We get it, Allen."

Allen squeezed her hand back gently. "Thanks."

Shea cleared her throat, her tone light again. "Okay, okay. Enough heavy talk." She gestured at the racks. "Allen still has a lot more outfits to pick."

Allen groaned. "Oh God."

The girls laughed, and just like that, the energy shifted back. But Allen sat there for a moment longer, running his thumb over the corner of his phone.

He didn't need to write. But he sure as hell wasn't going to stop anytime soon.
