"Gia, how did you become a high house maid?" Afina suddenly asked Gia out of the blue as the two girls chit-chatted.
Gia has gone back to sitting on her bed now.
"I wanted a good job, I applied for a maid post in the high house, and voila! Gia got the job" she cheered.
Her expressions caused Afina to laugh and out of old habits, she stood up and started to jump on her bed yet again.
"It's so soft Gia!" she shrieked. "Where on earth did they get such mattresses from!" her excitement was boundless.
Gia couldn't withhold herself as she burst into a peal of laughter.
She clasped her hands in front of her as she watched Afina. "Indeed, you are different" she laughed.
There was an aura about Afina which drew anyone she relates with to her. It was like an alluring energy that circulated around her and was just too powerful for any divine person to not get enchanted.
"Are you from the lower class also Gia?" Afina asked as she ended her bed jumping game, her whole body covered in sweat.
Gia became thoughtful for a while. "Urhmm, not entirely low-class. I'd say middle class" she finally decided on saying.
Oh, so her maid was of a higher social class than her. Life could twist and turn fates, couldn't it?
.
After Afina had finally stopped jumping on the bed. She and Gia resumed talks centered on getting to know each other better.
It seemed as though Afina was having one true friend in her entire lifetime.
She was usually a free-spirited person who made friends with everybody but none as her own personal person.
When it was time for lunch, the landline on the bed drawer of Gia's side of the room rang.
Afina who was more than excited to use a landline rushed to get the phone and like a corporate girl,
"Hello?" she said into the phone.
Her cosmic play was ruined for it was a recorded voice that accommodated no room for responses.
"All assigned maids should come to get lunch of the high house scholars" it kept on repeating.
Afina gave a wiggle of her nose and hissed. "They want you to come to get the meals," she said to Gia.
The girl had already stood from the bed. "I know" she clicked. "Be back in a jiffy" she squeaked before going out of the door.
Afina was watching her with keen interest as she cheerfully walked out of the door with her high heels which she had not pulled off since they arrives in the room professionally carried by her.
"Just how do you wear such terror on your feet for hours?" Afina blurted and threw her hands in the air even though she was speaking to no one else but herself.
.
Gia came in a few minutes later holding the tray that contained Afina's food.
A study desk and chair were sitting in the corner of the room and that was where Afina settled to have her food.
As she opened the glass dish, Afina's jaw dropped. "This is my food?" she asked amidst shocked smiles.
Gia looked confused a little. "Yeah, it is"
"Wow" Afina was already drooling. "We only have such big chickens at home during special events. And dessert? We don't even conclude a meal with dessert back at home. Oh, its vanilla flavored ice cream!" She stuffed her finger into it and licked it off. "Tastes like heaven" she breathed, her eyes closed in bliss.
Gia shook her head disapprovingly where she stood. "This is not how a high house scholar acts little miss" she scolded.
She moved closer to Afina and removed one of Afina's legs which were on the chair. "You don't place your legs on chairs when you eat and you sure as hell do not talk so much in the presence of a meal even if you are so excited" she lectured.
"What? Don't be a spoilsport. It's just you and me here" Afina rolled her eyes.
Gia was relentless. "The bad habit you have been practicing privately might subconsciously appear in public too because you have mastered it" she preached.
"You said not to talk so much yet you are making me talk a lot" Afina dragged the words then, she returned her leg back to the chair.
"I give up. You are relentless. Indeed, you are very different" Gia threw her hands up in surrender and went to lie on the bed.
Finally, she pulled off her heels.
When Afina heard the sound of her pulling off the heels, she mouthed an 'at last' to herself.
"What about you?" Afina asked out of the blue, turning her face to Gia.
Gia appeared lost. "What about me?"
"Your food, you are not eating"
"Ohh, we maids eat separately from the rest of the high house higher staff"
Afina completely turned to the girl now. "Why?"
"It is just how the rule is. Maids, after the labor workers in the high house, are the next lower staff. We don't dine higher with members of the high house ." Gia explained.
Afina wondered why such a rule should be established. Even these maids looked so clean one would mistake them for elites.
"That's bull" she voiced before resuming to finish her meal.
.
"I will take you to show you the way to prince Cargan's palace now," Gia said to Afina as soon as she returned from returning the dishes Afina had used in having her meal.
Afina sprouts up immediately. "That will be a good idea"
Gia opened the door of the closet and brought out Afina's heels. "When we get back, I will make sure to arrange your clothes," she said to herself but Afina could hear her.
"And I will help you out" she smiled and the two girls left the room to go on their tour.
Absolutely all of the other girls were also out with their maids.
Some were already down the staircase while some were still in the corridors.
Afina spotted the green qi girl with her maid who seemed taller than her. They were already down the stairs and exiting the duplex.
"Where is everyone going to?" She couldn't help but ask Gia.
Gia who waved at a maid absentmindedly answered her. "On a tour around the high house"
"Ohh" Afina's lips drew into a circular form. "Is that what we are doing too?"
Gia's attention had returned back to her now. "No. Since your case has changed and you have received an early duty, our tour will be solely based on everything there is to know about the prince" she explained.
Again, "Ohh" Afina nodded.
"Blue with the blue qi!" the waiting room girl squeaked mockingly from behind.
Afina was about to turn when Gia stopped her. "Just ignore them," she said.
"She has a green qi of the ninth stage I swear!" the other girl who had seen Afina's qi blurted.
That caused Afina to smile faintly. Let those girls keep thinking she had a blue qi until an opportunity comes for her to showcase her qi and they get the shock of their lives.
It appeared that some of the girls weren't getting along with their maids as one had harshly reprimanded her maid who was walking behind her for bumping into her when she halted.
"I'm glad I'm your maid," Gia remarked as they watched the scene.
"I have five personal maids at home and none of them are as clumsy as you! Are you even a high house maid at all?" she hollered angrily at the maid who had her head bent at a loss for what to do.
Afina wondered just how the maids who had dominantly ordered them in when they got out of the bus had become so soft.
As they passed beside the girl. "If you hadn't halted in your tracks like that, she wouldn't have bumped into you" Afina chirped, making sure the girl heard her.
"What did you say?! What did you say?!" the girl bellowed but Afina had already walked out of the door which usually slides open upon sensing the footsteps of its users.
As soon as they were outside, "You will get yourself in trouble" Gia cautioned her.
"Get me in trouble with those spoilt brats? I doubt it" she scoffed.
"They are from very wealthy families" Gia reminded.
Afina clicked her tongue playfully. "Don't you hear the matron? Reputation from outside dies the moment they got employed here. We are basically in the same class in the high house" she said.
If Gia agreed with her or not, she made no mention of it.
They walked past the duplex and passed an identical building to that of their duplex.
"Who stays here? It looks so much like our duplex" Afina asked Gia as she ogled at the building.
Gia took a short glance at it. "It is the building of the high house scholars from last year. Only three remain now" she explained.
Afina was flabbergasted. "Just three?"
"Yes"
"But why?"
"Most got expelled, two went into priestesses' path and are learning to become a high house priestess. One married the prince and the three that are left are the ones going into politics"
Afina listened with rapt attention. "The prince can marry a high house scholar?" she was amazed.
"Yes but on mutual terms of course. The prince is a good respecter of women" Gia said.
Afina was about to talk when Gia's voice cut her off.
"But I will never marry someone like him"
Afina's brow was curled in confusion. She thought every girl would be more than willing to marry someone like the prince. "Why?" she blurted, not believing Gia at all.
"Who wants to marry a monster? Moreover, why marry a man you can only be with once a month?"
Afina was unable to wrap her head around why the prince's wives could only be with him once in a month.
Since he knew he could not handle them, why marry so many?
For some reason, her heart began to thump. She was going to serve this man from tomorrow onward.
What was the main reason why amidst them all, she was the one picked for such an important job?
Gia said the matron wanted her expelled but she knew the matron need not break a sweat to do that.
If she wanted to see to her getting expelled, she would have done it right when she sent Ellie home too.
