CHAPTER 22 We Can't be Together

  Annie

I shouldn't have gotten ahead of myself and expected Evan to accept me completely. I knew what he thought of me already, and it wasn't anything different than what others say about me every day. I was an unattractive, awkward girl with glasses who could never be with someone like Evan. Even my own mother would agree with me on that.

How could I let myself be swayed by him?

He must've felt sorry for me or thought I'd be easy to use and then throw away. I am so stupid!

"Annie, are you okay?" Mike's voice was full of concern as he led me to my front door.

"Yes. Thank you for escorting me to my house," I said.

"Anytime. I know what Evan said upset you a great deal, so I wouldn't have left you alone even if you asked," Mike said.

"He was right, though," I said.

"No, he wasn't! He shouldn't be ashamed to be with you if he really likes you! And trust me, I mean it when I said you are really cute, and I have so much fun talking to you," he smiled.
