Convince the lawyer

An hour later, Max was pushed into that small room again.

At this moment, Lawyer Joe was already sitting inside.

In fact, Lawyer Joe had just left not long ago, because every time he came to talk to prisoners, he had to take notes. Thus while Max was in the cell, contemplating about the memories for a while and screaming in frustration for a while, the total time has not passed that long. Lawyer Joe drove the car out of the police station and was called back just after he passed a few red lights.

There is no way, after all, the prisoner has a history of mental illness, and he is about to be executed soon too, so one should respect his last wishes more or less.

The most important thing is that Lawyer Joe was afraid that the prisoner will do something crazy at this time and might even implicate himself.

So, the two met again.

"Hello."

Attorney Joe's opening remarks were obviously a bit reluctant.

Max sat down on the chair as if he couldn't hear the unwilling tone in it.

"Lawyer, my case is very tricky. I may have been wronged! "

This was the first thing Max said to him.

Lawyer Joe was taken aback.

"You mean, maybe you didn't kill the man?"

"Hmm!"

Max nodded heavily.

"Then why do you use the word [possible]? Are you not sure whether you killed someone or not?"

The lawyer's expression became even more suspicious.

"This...it's not important."

Max prevaricated it casually and continued:

"Anyway, I want to see the original copy of the case file, I want to see all the details, can you help me?"

"No."

Attorney Joe didn't even think about it and denied instantaneously.

"Ah? Why!"

Max asked a little surprised. Although he expected him to reject too, but he didn't think it would be so..... Uhhh sudden?

"You are the number one suspect. According to the regulations, you are not allowed to watch it."

Lawyer Joe explained.

"Then if I want to watch it desperately, if you don't show it to me, I will talk nonsense and defecate everywhere. The kind that bites when it sees a man, and licks when it sees a woman."

Max simply decided to act as 'the mentally ill' person he is supposed to be.

"This..."

Attorney Joe was a little timid when he heard it, thinking of Max's mental state and said after a little contemplation :

"If you have to read it, there is one way." "

"What way?"

Max asked hopefully.

"I can represent you and apply for a retrial of the case, but this requires sufficient weight evidence to overturn the previous conclusion, and the detective who took over the case needs to be present in person too."

Lawyer Joe replied.

Max was a little puzzled when he heard this, and thought to himself suspiciously, he wanted to watch the case file, why did a detective have to come to the scene. The whole thing seemed suspicious, almost like a detective can be solely responsible for a murder case.

Indeed, being a detective was a third-rate job in Max's world before his rebirth. Most of them were looking for cats and dogs, taking photos of cheating husband, etc. It was very rare to investigate for a case of 'murder'. Those who have the right to speak, such as [Conan], who can command the police almost do not exist in real life.

But Max didn't bother to think about it anymore, he nodded quickly.

"I have evidence!"

Afterwards, Max told the lawyer about the dust under the door crack.

"You are just making it up. How did you know these details? Is it written in the case file?"

After listening to it, the lawyer said with a weird look on his face.

When he heard this, Max slapped the table hard with a "snap!"

"What's wrong with not being written in the case file? It's not written because the police is not good at doing things. It's because that fucking detective had bad eyesight ! It's all because of other people's mistakes that I suffered this kind of innocent disaster and now I'm about to be executed for a crime I didn't commit. And you are still pushing back and forth with me here, aren't you a lawyer? Isn't it your duty to stand on my side and help me get rid of the suspicion? Why does it seem like you are helping the police to find a reason for their negligence? Are you worthy of your conscience ?"

Max took less than 10 seconds to finish this big set of words, and the words were so correct that Max doubted whether he was participating in cross talk debates in his previous life.

And these words did indeed have some effect. After the lawyer's words were suppressed, he was in a daze for a few seconds. Maybe he thought that what Max said really made sense.

But Lawyer Joe was still rational after all. He took off his glasses and nodded:

"Well, what you said makes sense, then I apologize for my behavior just now. But... you still need to pay attention to the process. Since there is nothing in written, then it can't be counted as evidence. And it's been almost half a year since then, what dust and door cracks are you talking about, there is no way to prove it, so...."

"It's okay, I can re-record the statement."

Max said, interrupting him.

"Re-record the statement?"

"Yes, as the person involved, my statement should be a little convincing. At the scene of the crime, I actually saw the detail of 'there is dust under the door', but when I recorded the statement later on, I didn't remember to say it. But I want to add it now."

Max said.

"Ummm....."

The lawyer hesitated:

"It is in compliance with the regulations to supplement the statement, but it has been so long, and it is difficult for your statement to be effective! Besides, since you saw it, why didn't you say it at that time? "

"I forgot at the time. It's that simple. "

Max said with a straight face.

"Ah? Forgot? Then why do you remember it now?"

The lawyer asked helplessly, pointing out the loopholes.

"I was mentally ill before, but suddenly recovered a few days ago and the improvement of the condition has wiped out some of my deep memories. Thus I dug it up again, I don't know what this condition is called but there must be many clinical examples, you just explain my situation to the police and ask them to go to the doctor for verification."

Max gave a 'reasonable' explanation.

"It's because of mental illness . As a result, the previous memory suddenly became clear~"

Lawyer Joe fell into deep thought, and exclaimed after a while:

"Hiss, this situation has never happened before. But it sounds a bit operable, but... just because of your unproven memory and a little dust under the crack of the door, it's a bit difficult to invite the detective over."

Max sat up straight, looking at the lawyer seriously.

"Lawyer Joe, you must have been a lawyer for many years. Are you willing to be an unknown lawyer who can only be summoned by the police for the rest of your life?"

Attorney Joe frowned.

"Now, there are only three days left before my execution date. A prisoner who was dying, in the last three days of his life, because of you, the death sentence was overturned, and he was even cleared of suspicion and acquitted. Is there any precedent for this situation?"

Max enticed him slowly.

"Should...uhh , no , there isn't any, I guess ."

Lawyer Joe answered hesitantly.

"So, if it succeeds, you will be the first person to drag a death row prisoner back from hell with your own hands. You will be touted as a hero who proved that people who fight against death are not only just doctors, but a lawyer can do the same too. You'll be in the news everywhere. Think about the newspaper headlines, with your name written in the largest characters. By then, your mailbox will be filled with commissions, and you'll make a huge fortune ."

Max said exaggeratedly .

It was easy to get into the ears of Attorney Joe. Indeed, if it is true as he said, then his career will definitely change.

Seeing this, Max leaned back in his chair and waited for his final decision.

"Okay, helping people is my obligation, and I will definitely do my best to save you. "

Attorney Joe said immediately with a righteous look on his face.
