You're Hired

*

"No need. You're hired."

Those words felt very strange coming from a man I had just bumped into, how would he know if I'm hired or not, I mean, just missed my freaking interview.

"That can't be right sir, I need to see someone in charge so I can at least get a shot at this job." I said as calm and as polite as I possibly could.

"And I'm telling you that there's no need to, you've already gotten the job." He said again.

"And how would you know that?" I asked getting fed up.

"Well, because I'm the boss." He said finally.

"What?" But before I could say anything else.

"Cyra! Are you back here?" I heard a voice.

I looked at the man and then the direction Mr. Smith's voice was coming from, I couldn't leave this conversation if what he was saying was true, so I decided...

"Over here, Mr. Smith!" I called back.

The man said nothing as I looked at him unsure of what next to do.

"There you are, I was worried sick when some youngsters came out saying the interview was over and no one was chosen." Mr. Smith explained.

"I missed the interview, Mr. Smith, someone had a wise idea to lock me in the washroom and I missed the whole thing, luckily, this man just unlocked the door for me," I said referring to the stranger behind me.

"Oh! Thank you, sir, I- Mr. Liam?" Mr. Smith paused.

"It seems like we meet again Smith, just as you predicted." The man smiled at Mr. Smith.

"If it's you who saved my girl then, you have my thanks and a free ride always." Mr. Smith thanked the man whose name was Liam, I supposed.

"It's no problem Smith, I was just telling my new secretary and personal assistant, that she's got the job," Liam said.

"You know this man, Mr. Smith?" I asked.

"That's your new boss Cyra. Mr. Liam Richards, the CEO and head of Fovx Industries." Mr. Smith confirmed.

"I hope you can accept this job so we can start immediate, Cyra." My name rolled off his tongue as Mr. Liam extended a hand.

"Y-yes, yes- I mean, yes sir," I said shaking his hand.

Was this a miracle? did I just get a job without being interviewed? Mom, are you watching? your baby girl just landed her first official job back home.

"Good, now if we can continue, I'll explain the job description on the way to our temporary office. Shall we?" Mr. Liam asked handing over my purse to me.

"Go Cyra, I'll let Penny and Nancy know the good news, you've earned it child." Mr Smith said with a smile.

I smiled back at him trying to stop myself from running him over with the excitement I felt, all this was still weird and new but I would get to ask my questions later. I took my bag from Mr. Liam with a nod and a smile.

"Yes, we shall," I said and followed after Mr. Liam.

I walked behind Mr. Liam as he spoke to someone over the phone and immediately after we walked out the door there was a black Mercedes Benz parked in front. The driver was already waiting by an open door, Mr. Liam entered the car and the door was closed behind him while I pulled open the door to the front seat...

"No. Back here." Mr. Liam said, so much for being a gentleman. I walked around the car and met the door open too, Mr. Liam must have opened it, I thought.

As soon as I closed the door the car's engine came to life and we were on the move. We sat in awkward and absolute silence for the next five minutes or so before Mr. Liam deemed it fit to start talking.

"Tell me miss Hudson, besides cleaning what else are you good at?" Mr. Liam asked.

"You saw... Sir?" I asked still not used to the fact that my new job started 13 minutes ago.

He nodded.

"It is my company after all and I get to choose my assistant. So tell me about your work experience." Mr. Liam urged me to continue.

"Yes sir. I moved to the United States on a scholarship at Stanford University after I had finished my secondary education here early, at the age of 19 I moved to the States and to sustain myself, I took up odd jobs, volunteered as a lecturer assistant and also interned at N.I Industries." I explained. Mr. Liam knocked at the back of the seat in front of him and the back of the chair opened, he picked out a file and closed it up. He browsed through them like he had read them before.

"It says here that you finished top of your class at business school and also took up a master's scholarship at the University. Now, what is a qualified person like that doing cleaning doors and dusting painting? Why didn't you continue at N.I?" Mr. Liam asked.

"Well sir, I was offered a permanent position at N. I Industries but due to some family issues back home I had to come back to London. As for the cleaning, it's due to a personal matter." I answered.

"Is it something I should worry about? Because from now on you'll be working very closely with me." Mr. Liam said. I stared at him for a second too long again before I composed myself to answer.

"No sir, nothing to worry about. Nothing at all." I answered.

"Good, now here's your contact, it'll do you good to read through. It has all you'll need to work as my assistant both at work and home,"

"Excuse me, home?" I asked interrupting him.

"Yes. Miss Hudson, but for now you'll strictly be working at the office, I'll need to know you better and trust you enough to let you into my home. And moving forward, I'd appreciate it if you never interrupt me again, is that understood." Mr. Liam said.

"Yes sir, I'm sorry sir." I apologized.

"Good, but please bear in mind that as much as I need a yes man, I need someone with a backbone, the kind of business I run is certainly not for the weak. Understood?" I felt like that statement was more of a threat than a statement. I swallowed hard.

"Yes sir."

"You see miss Hudson, I'm a very simple person but people seem to have the wrong idea of me, so I hope you can't last more than three weeks." Mr. Liam said, I wanted to ask what he meant by three weeks but decided not to interrupt him.

"Good. And by three weeks I mean, that's the longest I've had a secretary or personal assistant, I'm making a huge gamble hiring you as both now." Mr. Liam said.

"We're here sir." The driver said.

"Thank you, Walter. This is where you're going to be working, you could sign the contract now or you could come to do that first thing in the morning, that there is your copy." Mr. Liam said stepping out of the car.

"So, what's it's gonna be?" Mr. Liam said extending his hand again.

I thought about going home and telling my family about the job, if I say it hasn't been finalized yet, my father will do everything to stop me from working but if it is finalized, this could mean the biggest step in my life. I looked at Liam and took his hand, I never gave a fuck these past eight years, why do that now.

"Oh, and by the way, you can call me Liam when it's just us." He added.

"Yes, si- I mean Liam," I answered.

He smiled and started walking away, I followed closely behind holding my things all together, I could help notice people stopping whatever they were doing as Liam walked by, on our way to the elevator, the people who stood there moved out of the way and immediately the elevator open, whoever was in scurried out at the sight of Liam.

The intense feeling in the atmosphere had me feeling a chill down my spine and when the elevator door closed, I could almost cut the tension between us and the workers into two. It was a quiet ride up to the 10th floor. Immediately the doors pulled open we were greeted by a wide space and by a corner close to the elevator was a small desk.

"This is where you'll be stationed, I need you here at all times. Are we clear?" He asked.

"Yes, Liam." I answered. He paused then looked back at me, I was sure I had made a mistake by calling him by his first name.

"You catch on fast, I like you. Normally, others would call me sir or Mr. Richards and I'd fire them." He smiled then continued forward.

When we reached his desk, he pulled out some paperwork which I signed and his seal was put on it.

"Welcome to Fovx Industries, Cyra."
