For several heartbeats, no one spoke, but then Sophie huffed and shook her head adamantly. "No way. He can't." She clutched my arm, her nails biting into my flesh. "You have to stop him, Piper."

I yanked away and rubbed my arm. "Why would I try to stop him? Don't you get it? This is our way out." My gaze darted between my three sisters.

"Peyton, tell her." Sophie shifted in her chair to face our rightful leader. "Tell her to stop."

Peyton hesitated. "How are they planning to force his hand?"

"You cannot be serious." Sophie stood abruptly.

"Sophie, sit down," Peyton said, her tone leaving no room for argument.

She rarely used that tone with us, but whenever she did, we knew things were serious - usually life and death serious. This time was no exception. Once Sophie was seated, Peyton nodded at me to speak.
