After getting out of the shower and forcing myself away from Piper, I conducted a thorough inspection of the bed. Even with my sharpened vision and sense of smell, I didn't notice anything too concerning. Granted, the motel desperately needed to invest in new bedding, but as far as I could tell, everything was clean.
Eventually, we climbed into bed, and Piper fell asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow. All that magic over the past twenty-four hours had depleted her. Thank God she wouldn't have to expend any more magical energy for the time being. My body screamed for sleep, too, but I couldn't get my eyes to close. I was too on edge about everything, and I needed to be alert in case the guard found us.
