Chapter 175: Jax: Getting Ready to Run. Again

Michigan's Upper Peninsula

"Ready?" I dropped my stuffed duffel bag near the front door.

I honestly hadn't thought we'd need to leave the cabin so soon, but staying here now was too dangerous. God only knew if the guards would deliver Piper's message, and if they did, the king was going to be livid.

"Yeah, I guess." Piper shrugged, her voice devoid of emotion. Exhaustion hung from her limbs, slowing her movements.

I frowned as I studied her. Despite shifting to her dragon form, being banished from her coven was taking a toll on her. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. And there wasn't a damn thing I could do help her, and that pissed me off. I was supposed to take care of her, protect her, make sure she was happy and healthy - and I was failing on every level. Talk about a sh*tty soulmate.

"One way or another, this will be over soon," I said, trying to lift her spirits. But her smile was forced, and my heart sank even lower.
