A loyal guard

"Rana? Rana? Rana, wake up, Rana; you are sleeping too much. Rana, we need to go. Mom and Dad will be waiting for us for breakfast."

In the desolate, small cold room lacking in furniture, the young Amera said to her big sister, her chubby hands red because of the cold, shivering.

Rana inhaled and buried herself further in a thin blanket, curled up in the corner of the room on a paper-thin mattress, releasing a breath of foggy, warm air. Breathing in short intervals, only a few strands of her soft red hair peeked out.

"Rana, if you don't wake up, they're going to get angry."

Amera persisted in trying to wake her older sister. Not being able to realize that something was wrong with her.

"If you don't wake up, we won't be able to see mom and dad till tomorrow," she said, knowing her sister wouldn't want to miss out on seeing their mom and dad. It was the only time of day they got to see their parents and feel warm.
