The power of a colossus!

Mikel kept the soldier within his sights as he stood still without moving an inch. His bones were tense and ready to move at the shortest interval.

Cautiously watching Mikel, the soldier remained on edge. He had watched his comrade die in the most unethical of ways. He was pretty sure no one would believe him if he narrated what just happened.

'What exactly is this thing?' was the only thought going through his head.

Mikel used this opportunity to check his progress and stats;

'Wait, I have a new skill?'

Mikel was surprised for a few seconds as he saw a new skill in his skill slots but then he remembered receiving a notification when he was desperately trying to kill one of his opponents.

[Name: Disassemble

'A helpful skill,' Mikel commented.

It was a useful skill, yes, but the chances of it being helpful enough to get him out of this situation were almost zero. His enemy had full HP and it was a high amount as well. Not to mention the level difference.

He was able to defeat the other guy due to deception. That would not work a second time since this one was already cautious and had watched him employ unprecedented tactics to take down his companion.

The only way out now was to escape but Mikel had a nagging feeling that made him know he could not.

This feeling didn't concern the [link]. Just the fact that Mikel entertained the thought of retreating meant that the link was low enough for him to do that. Unfortunately, the urge to kill was still there.

It was like an annoying pest that he couldn't get rid of.

[Any bright ideas to get out of this one?]

'I need a distraction. One big enough to shift his concentration from me.'

[Well you're in luck...]

~RUMBLE!

The ground began to shake and both Mikel and the soldier struggled to keep their balance. Suddenly, in the next second, Mikel found himself inches off the ground after hearing a loud boom!

In the distance, from a large gaping hole, a skeleton over a hundred meters tall climbed out and just a single step caused Mikel who was far away to bounce off the ground!

Mikel landed back on his feet and so did his opponent, but the soldier had his eyes widened as he watched the huge skeleton that had appeared.

Even Mikel was in awe. The skeleton's information display showed question marks all through, but Mikel already know what it was. It was a colossus in its first form!

Although he had never fought these things or seen them in action directly, they were always most time in the background of in-game fight sequences and were known to be the main reason that most of humanity fell.

[Run!]

Hearing the voice of the system quickly prompted Mikel to turn and run away as fast as he could while avoiding the enemies on the battlefield.

Helen breathed heavily as she stole glances at the huge skeleton that had climbed out of the hole but she couldn't afford to have her attention divided.

~OOOM!

Hearing that sound Helen quickly crouched and the air above her distorted. Although it couldn't be seen, Helen had just narrowly avoided having her head split apart!

Quickly pushing off her toes, Helen launched herself towards the grim reaper but quickly cut her assault short to avoid its deadly scythe.

Helen retreated backward but the grim reaper rushed towards her before she could gain her balance! For the first time, Helen panicked as she saw the blade a few inches away from her face.

'Shit! Do I have no choice but to use that?!' As that thought went through her head, she saw no other choice but to unleash...

~BOOM!

An explosion occurred between the grim reaper and Helen which caused her to be pushed away and created some distance between them.

Helen was on her feet by the time the momentum from the explosion ended. Looking at herself she realized that she was unhurt! There was only one person she knew on this battlefield that could pull something like that off.

"Lieutenant!" Julius' voice rang out.

Helen turned to see him running towards her with panic written all over his face. Julius froze when he saw that one of Helen's hands was pitch black which meant she had been poisoned by death energy and it was turning critical!

Quickly grabbing Helen, Julius brought out a totem and broke it immediately. A bright white light appeared and by the time it disappeared, they were far away from the battlefield and in the back lines with the healing mages.

Seeing Helen's condition, the nearest mages quickly began to attend to her. Helen hissed in pain as their magic seeped into her skin to fight off the death energy.

"What's the situation?" Helen managed to ask.

"We've taken multiple casualties but the fact that a colossus has appeared on the battlefield is more important right now. It seems our fears were right, they're after the city," Julius said with underlying panic in his voice.

He knew how powerful a colossus was and the chances of the city barrier surviving the assault of one before it was handled were close to none. They had to retreat now to aid in preparations against it.

"Relax Julius, it's still in its first form and also docile, we'll take care of it here with the airship's—"

"LIEUTENANT!"

Hearing the sudden scream, Helen turned, and what she saw made her face turn pale!

"ORDER THE AIRSHIP TO RETREAT NOW!" She shouted at the top of her lungs but it was already too late.

The colossus had its jaws open and pitch-black death energy was swirling around in its mouth. In the next moment, soundlessly, a beam shot out and completely devoured the airship!

Nothing was left!

There was no explosion. When the beam disappeared, the airship was gone as well. Helen had a look of bewilderment on her face.

~ROAR!

A guttural roar echoed in the battlefield from the colossus as dark energy gathered on it and formed pitch-black skin that looked like a mash of thin wires that moved around!

This was it; the colossus' second form!

Bright red eyes were in its eye sockets and everything created an image that made it look like a creature from the darkest parts of the abyss.
