Chapter 28

“You said what?” Jake’s voice rose and came clearly down the hall to where she was standing and fighting off a wave of memory. “Of all the boneheaded-“ Siana could hear the consternation in Jake’s voice. “Did you at least apologize?”

“I am not an idiot, Jake.” Naerin said, almost quiet enough that Siana couldn’t hear him. “My apology for my ill-considered words was not accepted, which I suppose was deserved.”

“I swear, if you cram that stick any further up your ass, you’re going to choke on it.” Jake said, and it was clear from his tone that he’d told Naerin this a lot. “You really need to lighten up, friend. Whatever’s going on isn’t Siana’s fault and she’s probably scared. You could try a little sympathy.”

“Pryderin is coming.” Naerin said, and again, Siana almost missed his words. “He will help her; it is all I will be able to do to guard her when she comes fully into her power.”
