Ethan Yip was the sergeant detective of the Homicide Unit with the Hong Kong Police Department.  With the sudden disappearance of his girlfriend of two years, Anita Mak, he became emotionally unavailable and was often unable to control his temperamental mood.  That was until a clinical psychologist, Gillian Chan, came along.  Over a course of events, the two eventually developed a close and intimate relationship.  After dating for a couple of years, Ethan finally proposed to Gillian.  Just when he and Gillian were making plans for their big wedding day, Anita resurfaced and was rescued from the abductor at large.  When the truth about how Anita had sacrificed her life to save Ethan’s life over the last 3 years by pretending to be in love with her abductor, Gillian felt her future with Ethan as husband and wife was once again on rocky ground.

Thinking Ethan would never be able to live with himself if he were to leave Anita after finding out the truth behind her 3-year disappearance, Gillian felt she had to be the one to make the difficult choice in severing from this somewhat triangular relationship.  In order to detach her feelings for Ethan, she kept telling herself that he had never truly let go of his hope of finding Anita from the start of their relationship; even during the time when they were together as a couple about to be married.  Gillian convinced herself that Ethan was still in love with Anita after all these years.  Finally, she made a decision to move on and told Ethan that they would remain friends forever.  She decided heading oversea was the best course of action to take.
