Chapter 41: Laying Low

Layla opened her eyes slowly from a dreamless sleep.

It took her a moment to realize where she was since she wasn’t by the fireplace anymore. As she sat up she realized Atreus must have carried her to the bedroom last night and tucked her into the soft blankets, but Atreus was nowhere to be seen. The sun was shining brightly through the single window, casting the room in the warm orange glow of late afternoon. She must have slept through the better part of the day.

Swinging her legs off the side of the bed, Layla stood with one of the blankets wrapped around her body as she was still naked from the night before.

Walking to the door of the bedroom she slipped out into the main living area. It took her a moment to spot Atreus sitting at the breakfast nook in the corner of the kitchen. His expression was moody and he seemed to be in deep thought.

As Layla approached, he looked up at her and his eyes softened slightly.

“Did you get enough rest?” he asked.
