Chapter 33: Did Someone Say Dragons?

I stepped in line with the circle of kids around seven silver cages. Inside each was a small dragon about the size of a cat. They had wings and glowing eyes and were different colors: black, white, red, gold, blue, purple and a silvery one.

"They're beautiful," I whispered in a breath.

"Good morning, class." A woman strode forward with a handful of gloves. Her bright red hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she wore a biker jacket, jeans, and riding boots.

"Can dragons be familiars, Mrs. Darrins?" a girl across from me with braces and braids asked.

"Not that I've ever heard of. It would take a special mage to win the friendship and trust of a dragon once they are older." Mrs. Darrins started handing out the gloves. "Each of you will put one of these on your non-dominant hand. They will protect you from the dragon's talons and poison."

I raised my hand and when the teacher nodded, I asked, "Poison? Are they venomous?"
