The air crackled with the oppressive weight of dark magic as Kaito staggered to his feet, shaking off the disorientation from the blast. Li Xuan's eyes widened in concern, but his focus remained on the looming danger. The demons that had ambushed them now regrouped, circling their camp like predators toying with their prey.
"Hold fast!" Li Xuan shouted, his voice cutting through the tension like the edge of his sword. His blade shimmered under the moonlight as he took a defensive stance beside Mei Hua, who had already drawn her twin daggers.
Mei Hua glanced at Kaito, her brow furrowed with worry. "Are you alright?" she called, stepping closer to him.
Kaito gritted his teeth, pushing himself up with the help of his staff. "I'm fine. These demons... they're using some kind of ancient magic, something more powerful than we've encountered before."
Liu Fang stepped forward, her glaive spinning elegantly in her hands as she surveyed the advancing demons. "We need to push back—strike before they launch another attack," she urged, her eyes flashing with determination. "Their magic can be disrupted if we hit them fast enough."
Li Xuan nodded in agreement. "Zhang Lei, Fang, you take the left flank. Mei Hua, stay close to me. Kaito—focus on the barrier and keep those runes active."
As the group prepared for battle, the leader of the demon hunters, the fierce woman from earlier, stepped up beside them. Her dark eyes burned with a cold fury as she assessed the situation. "This isn't just a random attack," she murmured. "Someone, or something, is driving these demons. They don't usually work together like this."
Before Li Xuan could respond, a chilling laughter echoed through the trees, low and menacing. A figure emerged from the shadows at the edge of the clearing, cloaked in darkness, his features barely visible save for the malevolent glow of his eyes.
"Ah, you've noticed," the figure said, his voice smooth and mocking. "How perceptive of you. But it won't help you."
The air around him shimmered as his form solidified—tall, robed in dark armor etched with runes similar to those Kaito had studied earlier. His very presence exuded a suffocating aura of power. Li Xuan recognized it immediately—their adversary wasn't just any demon. This was one of the Demon Lord's lieutenants, a general of dark magic and destruction.
"Who are you?" Li Xuan demanded, stepping forward. His sword blazed with a faint white light as he held it before him.
The demon general grinned, revealing sharp fangs. "You may call me Kaelith. I am here to deliver a message from my master. Turn back now, or face annihilation."
The tension in the air grew thicker, but Li Xuan stood firm. "We don't cower before threats," he said, his voice low but unyielding. "If your master is the Demon Lord, we're coming for him. This is your only warning—stand aside."
Kaelith's grin faded, replaced by a cold sneer. "Foolish mortals. You're in over your heads. I'd hoped you'd have the sense to flee, but if it's a fight you want... then you shall have it."
With a wave of his hand, Kaelith summoned a torrent of dark energy, his runes glowing with sinister light. The ground trembled as the demons surged forward, their snarls and roars filling the night air.
Kaito chanted quickly, his staff raised as he reinforced the magical barrier surrounding their camp. "I can't hold it for long!" he warned, sweat beading on his forehead. The dark magic from Kaelith's spell pressed against the shield, warping its shape.
Zhang Lei's eyes flashed with focus as she darted toward the nearest demon, her twin blades gleaming. With a swift, fluid motion, she sliced through its defenses, but more demons quickly replaced it.
"Don't let them break the barrier!" Mei Hua shouted as she leaped into action beside Li Xuan. Her movements were swift and graceful, her daggers flashing like lightning as she struck at the demons swarming toward them.
Li Xuan moved like a force of nature, his sword cleaving through the demonic ranks. For every demon he felled, however, two more seemed to take its place. Despite their strength and skill, it was clear the group was being overwhelmed.
Kaelith watched the chaos unfold, his eyes gleaming with sadistic amusement. "You're resilient, I'll give you that," he taunted, "but resilience will only delay the inevitable."
In the midst of the battle, Kaito's eyes locked onto the runes engraved on Kaelith's armor. The symbols were ancient—older than anything he had seen in the demon realm thus far. And then, realization struck him like a thunderbolt.
"These runes... they're controlling the demons!" he yelled over the din of the fight. "If we break his connection to them, we can stop the horde!"
Li Xuan didn't hesitate. "How do we do that?"
Kaito's mind raced. "We need to disrupt the flow of his magic. Hit him with everything we've got and target those runes on his chest!"
Without wasting a moment, the group refocused their efforts. Mei Hua and Liu Fang carved a path toward Kaelith, their blades whirling with deadly precision. Zhang Lei followed closely, her eyes narrowed with determination.
Li Xuan faced Kaelith head-on, his sword blazing with energy as he closed the distance. "Your arrogance will be your downfall," he growled, swinging his sword in a powerful arc.
Kaelith deflected the blow with ease, but for the first time, a flicker of annoyance crossed his face. "You're persistent, I'll give you that," he sneered.
As Li Xuan pressed the attack, Kaito chanted a spell under his breath, gathering energy from the surrounding runes. With a burst of concentration, he unleashed a blinding beam of light directly at Kaelith's chest.
The demon general snarled in surprise as the beam struck his armor, the ancient runes sparking and sputtering. His connection to the demons faltered for a brief moment, and in that instant, the tide of battle shifted.
"Now!" Li Xuan roared, swinging his sword in a deadly arc. His blade cut through the darkness, slicing into Kaelith's side, and the general let out a howl of rage as dark energy poured from the wound.
The demons, now disconnected from Kaelith's magic, stumbled and fell back, their cohesion shattered.
Breathing heavily, Kaito lowered his staff, exhaustion washing over him. "It's not over yet," he muttered, glancing at the wounded but still-standing Kaelith.
But as the demon general glared at them with seething hatred, something else flickered in his eyes—uncertainty.
"I'll be back," Kaelith hissed, retreating into the shadows. "And next time, you won't be so lucky."
