Chapter 1: An Unwelcome Invitation

Kiko seemed to slump compared to her usually regal posture as her carriage bounced on the road, frowning as she stared through the window at the passing scenery. The ocean views of her kingdom gave way to the fields of wildflowers from Erya- another kingdom known for their charming people. She hated all flowers, but the blue rose Varro had crafted for her was an exception. Its petals were exceptionally smooth- resembling glass, and its color matched the depths of her own eyes.

Varro sat across from her, his eyes all but carefully placed on the princess as he mindlessly shifted through the invitation and paperwork again. He had always been her only loyal servant, but lately, Kiko had sensed a shift in his demeanor. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but something was different.

She sighed and leaned into his shoulder, closing her eyes. It had been several days since they had set out on their journey, and she was tired. The invitation from the Erya had come suddenly, and she couldn't shake the feeling that it was a threat.

Kiko wouldn't hide from challenge though. She was sharp with her words, but not rude. Her siren-like charm and eyes had won her many allies, and even more enemies. The prince who had invited her to his kingdom was one of her many enemies, and she had no doubt he had a plan.

When the carriage continued its way and the kingdom was shown in all its glory against the sunrise, Kiko felt a familiar sensation at her fingertips. She looked down and clenched her gloved fingers together as she saw the ocean view beginning to rise.

"Do you see it?" she asked Varro, her voice disguising her surprise. Her powers hadn't been this uncontrollable since her 9th birthday 10 years ago.

Varro's eyes were soft and unfocused as he looked at her. "I don't know, your highness," he replied, his voice trembling. He probably had something on his mind.

Kiko closed her eyes and focused on holding it back. She felt a pull, like a current in the ocean, and she instinctively saw the ocean almost rising to their level, although it was low just a few minutes ago. Just as Varro touched her though, she felt her heart pound from shock. It felt like electricity. The tide had fallen and the ocean seemed to smile at her.

She smiled slightly to herself. No one knew about it, not even Varro. As the carriage continued on to the heart of the city, Kiko's mind was already spinning with plans and possibilities. She was a princess, after all, and she would do whatever it took to find other like her- however estranged they might be from their powers.
