He sighed heavily. "So I heard. I assume this is about why you were so quiet with the King?"
"No… I mean, yes, but not really. I mean…" I cursed under my breath. "I need to talk to you about the King. Yes." He didn't respond again. Shit. I swallowed hard. "I don't want to sound silly, but—"
"I don't need to hear your explanation, Zara."
I frowned into the dark. "You don't?" My first instinct was that David must have told someone, and Ash must have heard. But that made no sense. David had been so worried that we keep up appearances… then it hit me.
"Did you open the door, or go into the library while we were there?" I asked hesitantly.
"No, but… why? What would I have seen?" His voice was sharp.
"Nothing," I said, completely truthfully. "I'm just wondering why you think you already know what I'm going to say. I thought maybe you overheard, or thought—"
