I'd insisted on sitting up in bed because I wanted to look him in the eye, not lay there like I was some pathetic sack of flesh. The reality was I'd slept more than I would have thought possible the day before, and even though my leg hurt, it was only when I moved, and it didn't steal my breath like it had the day before.

"David, I'm so glad you're—"
He reached my bed and took my face in his free hand, leaning down to kiss me deeply.
