Simple Pleasures

~ ZARA ~

A little digging and there were no problems.

There was fresh butter. A ham wrapped in oiled paper. A wheel of cheese. Three different kinds of freshly baked bread, and some kind of sweet relish I'd never encountered before, but it was delicious. I even found a leafy green vegetable that was more fragrant than lettuce, a little sweeter, but would serve the same purpose.

I made us sandwiches.

The bread was cut a little crooked, and the cheese was too thick. But when I laid a plate in front of David with two, doorstop sandwiches on it, his face was a picture.

"You cooked for me."

I snorted. "That's not cooking."

His head snapped up. "You know how to cook?"

"Well of course, how else do you think I fed myself—" I swallowed the words, almost choking on them, because I'd been about to say, "After a day at the office."
