I was suddenly very, very afraid of what she might say.
I stared at her, hiding the chittering fear that crawled into my throat as I desperately tried to push away the thoughts, the images, the sudden conviction that her former experience might be at this man's hands.
Shock and disgust and a hint of embarrassment flickered across her face. "What?! No!" she hissed. "Why would you even think—"
But then she cut off and my stomach plummeted as her forehead wrinkled and her eyes went dark.
Was she remembering something? Or growing angry? I couldn't tell. I wanted to shake the truth from her.
Then she shook her head and a weight appeared in my stomach.
"What is it?" I whispered darkly.
Her throat bobbed. "Did he… what on earth would make you ask that?"
It was her turn to look afraid of what I would say. My chest burned.
