"She admitted that she'd been jealous and said she was getting sick of Zara lording her position over the rest of them, so she got a little snappy with her. But of course, then she got playful with, asking me—you—if I blamed her for her frustration. I stayed quiet on that point."

"No, that can't be the whole story," I muttered, pacing back and forth in front of the fire in the study, which had been my favorite room in the entire palace, but now all I saw when I was there was the place that I'd held Zara in my arms for a whole night the first time, and the way she'd comforted me, the things we'd done in that room.

It made my skin feel like a prison I wanted to cut my way out of.
