"I… I…." I had never felt so utterly torn in my life. Everything within me craved her. But the proof of her duplicity was undeniable. The fear of trusting her, of giving in to this emotional plea tore my heart in two.
I stared, unable to answer, unable to think, because every instinct that pushed me in one direction met another yanking me in the other.
"David… please," she breathed. She was shaking.
The hunger in me to gather her in, to touch her, to smell her, to kiss her and own her and never let her out of my sight or my arms—
"David, let her talk. Listen to her. Don't… don't argue. Just listen." Stark's voice was deep and gruff, but there was pleading there too.
He stood in the doorway—blocking my exit—with the Lieutenant he'd chosen for the female ranks… his arm around her?
