The clang of the cell door woke me from a groggy half-sleep.
It must have woken Emory too, because I heard her gasp.
When I sat up, blinking and rubbing my puffy eyes, it was to find Hildie standing in the doorway with two more female guards behind her and her arms crossed.
"Get up," she snapped fiercely, and I didn't see so much as a glimmer of recognition or encouragement in her eyes. "You're going to be… interviewed."
She gave a sly smile when she used that word to imply this was far more than an interview.
I'd heard different prisoners screaming at different times. I knew what this meant. My heart hammered in my chest.
Was it possible that they all really did think that I was evil? Had Stark really believed I'd tricked him into helping me kill David? If he did, Hildie would have no mercy, I knew. She'd been clear from that first moment we met about what she thought of me and how little respect she held for me.
