I glared at Raymond.
"You told Zara that from the time of our birth, you and my father had plans to unify us when we were adults. Explain."
His upper lip pulled towards a sneer, but he raised a shaking hand to the table, his hand clenched to a fist. The chains clinked, but he ignored them, leaning on its surface. For support? Or in a show of confidence? It bothered me that I couldn't discern the difference.
"Your father and I were… intimates," he said reluctantly. "Before Zara's birth we had discussed the idea, and when we had girls, it only cemented the sense of it all. Yes, we betrothed you in secret and planned to marry you to each other when you were old enough."
"When did that plan change?"
"You'll have to ask your father," Raymond said with a sly smile.
The blow landed, but I didn't flinch. I raised my chin with a warning in my eyes. "At what point did you become aware that this plan was not going to happen?"
