Idiots are unpredictable

The first night of Leon's debt-free life ended up being the night that he lost everything important to him.

Lured out by the suspicious noise, the reddish-brown-haired man walked out of the orphanage with full vigilance, but he still couldn't predict or defend against the attack from the back.

"Will it actually work?"

Leon, with his fading consciousness, heard a voice, although he couldn't be sure whether it was real or just a hallucination caused by the impact.

"If his debt got bought by a wealthy noble, it means he is worth something for them. We will simply use it to make them pay us for his freedom~"

The response came from behind Leon, as if there was another person participating in the ambush.

"Don't make that face. I paid off one of those weasly bastard's men and a servant girl at the inn, and this guy and the noble had their talk. They want him. They will pay."

The same person added before the first one could speak up.

"Fine. But this better work. After getting pushed out of Startinton by those old fucks some of our boys are starting to question your validity as a leader, Theodore. Better make this one count."

"Tsk!"

But when the first person finally spoke, they sounded bitter to the point of anger, causing the latter one to click their tongue in annoyance.

"While we're at it… are we taking the kids from this place? They could fetch a nice price, and I do still have some connections in the right circles…"

"No. We need to send a message that we're serious."

The first person breathed out and then asked in a different tone, but their comrade rejected the suggestion and declared.

"...you don't mean…?"

The first person muttered quietly in a tense voice.

"Half the town is watching the fire by the southern gate. Why not give the other half something to enjoy, too? Here, we'll use this."

"Fire pellets? Going all out, I see… Alright. You take our guest, and I'll..."

The conversation continued, but with the warmth spilling out of the back of Leon's head, his consciousness faded into darkness.
