At 4:00 AM, Laura woke up and walked into the office room, wearing her purple scarf and black hijab. She found Maulana with his feet on the desk, brown shoes and black socks, and his turban on the table.
"Morning and Asalam O Alaikum! You performed Fajr right?" Laura asked.
Maulana replied without looking at her, "Yeah!"
Laura continued, "You need something? I'll go make you some food?"
Maulana said, "Last night, I saw two cats fighting, a black and a white one... Laura."
Laura headed to the kitchen, where 'Tagar' was written in white. "So... tea it is."
Maulana followed her into the kitchen and sat down at the table. "The real question is..."
Laura looked at him while making tea. "What were they fighting at?"
Maulana's eyes were intense. "Maybe the real question is what they were fighting for."
Laura replied, "Huh! You want toast or not?"
Maulana's voice was firm. "I believe the cats were fighting for their families. What other reason could there be?"
Laura placed toast with omelette on two plates and poured tea into mugs with 'Purple Heads' written on them in purple. "Yeah? Maybe, or maybe they were fighting just for fun."
Maulana's expression turned serious. "I wish that is the case, Laura, but what if it's not? What if what's picking up the fight is not just for fun but to destroy someone, and to destroy me, they'll try to hurt the one who's closest to me..."
Laura put her hand on Maulana's shoulder, holding the tobacco pipe. "Hey, cool down, alright? If they came for me, I'll cut their balls off."
Maulana held her face in his hands. "It's a state-level threat, Laura... please... I think we'll have to leave this country, or else..."
Laura's voice was confident. "Or else what? A bloody war we'll enter into? We've already fought one, and we're ready for another one. Don't worry."
Maulana's hand rested on her belly. "What if tomorrow..."
Laura smiled. "It'll take a lot of time, well, it's been just three months since we married, and you're worrying about our kids... or are you using it as an excuse for me to worry and do what you say?"
Maulana leaned back, a hint of amusement on his face. "You're very clever, Laura."
They started eating and drinking tea as the winter sun shone through the kitchen window.
