The Haunting Sound

[Meryl]

With every ten steps they took, Meryl couldn't resist stealing glances behind her, hoping to see the others following closely. But all that greeted her were the unsettling darkness and an eerie silence, broken only by the sound of their own footsteps.

Her heart ached, yearning for Lina and Leon to catch up with them. The memory of Leon weighed heavily on her conscience, squeezing her throat with guilt. Despite his infuriatingly nonchalant behavior, she never wished him harm. She wasn't the one who pulled the trigger, yet it felt like she had betrayed him . . . betrayed them all.

Shaking her head, Meryl tried to push away the self-blame and regret that threatened to paralyze her. She had made her decision from the beginning, refusing to go to that mansion.

Dwelling on past mistakes would only hinder her progress. What mattered now was reaching the military camp as quickly as possible.
